Statement was released 2 hours ago in CYA mode. Edwards saw the backlash and is trying to cover his arse now. Typical politician

Thats what anyone who isnt an a-hole should say. I mean, at least if you live in america, a country founded by multiple groups of people fleeting religious persecution

Je Suis Paris!

Katrina refuges may have included thugs and murderers, but they weren't fanatical jihadis among them. The Syrians have proven what they can harbor.

no we are going to turn them away because they have proven to be a conduit for terrorism. Its not fear, its self preservation.

Likening Syrian refugees, of whom we can't ensure their identity or possible affiliations, to those on the Mayflower is completely dishonest.

We've already seen what 8 seasoned vets can do, but yet, we'll now bring in 10,000-65,000. Excellent plan.

You've been here long enough to know better. So answer my question. What really is so bad about his statement?

what a total crock of shite spin job this is

quote:

BATON ROUGE – As reports over the weekend indicate that 14 Syrian refugees have arrived in Louisiana, State Representative John Bel Edwards maintained communication with law enforcement officials across the state. Over the course of the weekend, he spoke, on numerous occasions, with Col. Mike Edmonson, Superintendent of the Louisiana State Police, and Mike Ranatza, of the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association, regarding the current status of refugees in the State of Louisiana.

“News reports indicate that more than a dozen refugees have made their way to Louisiana,” said Rep. Edwards. “While we understand the need to provide a safe haven from those facing persecution, we cannot do it at the expense of the safety of our people here in Louisiana. This isn’t political. We have an obligation to put aside the partisan rhetoric and work together to keep our people safe.”

On Saturday, Rep. Edwards issued a statement calling on the Obama Administration to hault placing Syrian refugees in the State of Louisiana pending answers to questions from the Jindal Administration regarding the security measures in place. To our knowledge, those questions have yet to be answered. Weekend reports indicate that one of the Paris attackers used a potentially fake Syrian passport.

Rep. Edwards statement from the weekend was as follows:

"As an Army Officer, I took an oath to preserve and protect the people of this country. As Louisiana’s next Governor, my top priority will be to ensure the safety of our people. That’s why the LA Sheriff’s Association and the LA State Troopers Association are supporting our efforts.

"In light of the recent tragedy in Paris, it’s imperative for us to pause the influx of refugees flowing into our state without more information on the security measures in place. Gov. Jindal has requested additional information from the President on how the federal government is handling the refugees being sent to Louisiana, and I think the President has an obligation to provide answers before we move any further.”

sounds like a very thought out, rational response to syrian refugees being brought to our state.

its fleeing, not fleeting. Those who came here fleeing religious persecution didn't import terrorism once they arrived.
If you want them so badly, move to a country/continent that is hosting them. It seems Europe would be perfect for you.

We can't separate out who are the bad guys amongst them that will be coming as well. Sorry, just the way it is.

I was just saying I think may forget that 10%+ of the Syrian population are Christians and they have it the worst right now and many are fleeing the country.

I don't understand why people can't comprehend that.

Peter King of NY said he talked to the agencies in charge of vetting these refugees and they acknowledged they can't verify the identity or background of these people with any degree of certainty.

Fine then, send the Christians and leave the Muslims behind.

I think we have a miscommunication. I don't care what their religion is. My point was that you have guys like Huckabee demanding that we refuse people who are in need and he is supposedly a devout Christian. Just seems a bit unfair to me.

Yes it really can be that hard. We have so much success trying to keep our own nutjobs from blowing groups of people up.

But this is a group of 14. If we can't verify they are legit before setting them free, then we don't set them free. It's 14 people. Let's get real instead of spewing a bunch of rhetoric.
