Yeah magnet is kinda like charter schools

My nephew is at magnet school
Few couples moved into neighborhood this summer just in time for kids to start kindergarten
Go to register for school and are told school is full because of slots fill by people far out that were taken in march
These people that paid bank for real estate are now quite pissed

Well for starters, you need to know if it is a request or an offer?
There is a reason they ask you. Either they want to invest in your or they are looking to transfer people before they make cutbacks. in BTR.

The request is being made because they are in need of someone with my qualifications in the Houston office. Specifically, I've been supporting a particular client in the area remotely from BR - it would be huge for my company to have someone local to support a large amount of expected upcoming business from the same client, particularly because of the work that I've done.
I would plan to live in the Clearlake area, near where the office is. I have no plans to live in the loop or exceptionally far away from the office, so that wouldn't be a huge issue.

In that case ask for $$$. Your relocation package should cover all expenses with an allowance for temporary housing, car registration changes, and any other miscellaneous incidentals you incur

I just went through this
I work on the west side so I chose Katy
Wife and kids then picked a school and we rented a house in the district. We chose Cinco Ranch and KISD. My kids walk to one of the best schools in Texas. If your company offers a rental stipend then take it and look for a house to buy later. Market is sky high right now.
I got a relocation bonus and moving expenses paid in full. If your wife works get her with a head hunter firm ASAP and look for a job within 25 miles of your house. My wife found a job pretty easily, she is an accountant. She takes the west park tollway, easy commute once you get the times down. Leave for work at 6:45am, leave for home at 4:30.

Now that you have cleared up the request- if it were not you who is the next go to person? Are you the first one they asked? If so you are likely the first choice and have some leverage- If you are willing to move and are eager about it- let them know you see this as a great opportunity but need to understand the compensation structure

Luckily, we bought our house before this shite REALLY blew up. I know people are selling houses in Cinco for 20-30k above appraisal right now. Very nice hoods North of I-10, so don't believe the hype. Kids love the schools, no tax on groceries or medications, no state income taxes either.
Property taxes are a MFer though. Rent for a while, let this real estate bubble burst. I miss BTR, and Watson, but honestly...

I see a bunch of folks here touting that there is no state income tax in texas...true, but there one hell of a property tax...
also, clearlake city is a damn nice place to live...I would consider it solely due to its proximity to salt water fishing...

And "quicker opportunities for advancement" is a fricking stupid thing to request. They will agree to that in a heartbeat while laughing their arse of at you because all they have to tell you is nothing ever came up for you to advance.
Get money for moving expenses grossed up for taxes and a raise and additional time off so you can travel to see the family that you will leave behind.
Did I mention get it in writing
We moved to years ago and we got a relocation guarantee in writing that was good for a year and if something happened to the job the company would pay 6 months severance and relocation to wherever we wanted to move. Someone didn't do their homwork because the lay off came after 11 months and they had to pay out because we got it in writing

I was the first they asked. They have been trying to hire someone in Houston that could essentially train under me, but were unsuccessful. I know that I was the first option when hiring someone local didn't work out. I'm not sure who they would potentially ask after me.

I have no reason to believe that they wouldn't. My company has generally taken care of its people. Since I would be their top choice to relocate (probably ahead of hiring someone new like they tried, but they were likely trying to find other options first), I feel like it would potentially be a good career move, but I need to make sure that is in fact the case.

The financial ramifications of this relocation depends on where the office is in Houston and whether or not you are a suburbanite/commuter already.
If they're office is downtown and you're used to a shortish commute then prepare your anus for high prices for anything close. If their office is away from downtown and you're used to suburban lifestyle then you may actually come out ahead.

I would certainly bring this up in the conversation- two other things I would consider
1. Are there ramifications if you turn them down?
2. Who will your new boss be? If you have ever had to work for a bad boss you know that can ruin everything
