I may be getting an offer to move across country in the next couple of days. My current office is going to be short handed with my move. So I'd like to give them 3-4 weeks notice to get a job announcement posted and maybe even start the interview process. I'd also like to get the ball rolling to sell my house and begin packing everything up.

Is 6-8 weeks too much time to ask for in starting the new job to get my current job properly closed out and handle housing issues?

Perfectly reasonable for a cross country relocation

As long as it takes a woman to recover and prepare for care up to and after pregnancy. It's only fair.

That's about 6-8 weeks, so he's all good.

Ask to see what ye shall receive

but I wouldn't' factor in the place you're leaving much more than the standard 2 weeks. I know it's unbelievable, but people can manage without you. No one is as special as they hope they are. So ask for 6-8, see if they flinch, then take about 4 weeks off to make the move smooth.

Do what you can for old job, that's a nice thought. But your loyalty MUST lie with new job.

yeah, I just swapped in September. My old employer said he wanted 4 weeks, then cut me loose after 9 days. Missed a check because of that crap

2 weeks notice.

6 weeks to move is reasonable.

Thanks for the replies (including the obligatory burgers and fries posts. . . Was surprised it took til the 2nd post).

If it makes any difference I currently indirectly work for the guy who may be hiring me. I'll just be working direct for him now.

So while it'll pick up the slack in one office he's responsible for, it'll lead to more effort on his part in my current job.

You don't have a relocation company taking care of the move and selling your house? In an ideal situation, you give two weeks and the new company takes care of the rest
