My son played baseball at Lakeshore for 5 years. What a cluster frick that park is. They need a complete revamp of their system. We moved to Mandeville, and the system there is night and day to the crap JPRD has going.

I played at Lakeshore, and right now, it’s the strongest playground in JPRD. They’re pulling kids from Lakeview, no other playground can touch them.

When I was kid playing in the 70’s, it was always between us, Girard and Bright..
But back in those days, Bucktown was still a big shrimping community, people actually built Lafitte and Jefferson skiffs in their front yards. Those days are long gone.

How can they pull kids from an Orleans Parish playground to a JP Playground?

Lakeview, behind Delgado is a strong playground that is always packed

I don’t know, but with some rule change they are.. OP said that JPRD still uses district separation, they changed that ruling the last year or so..

You can now pay like $150 a year and play at any playground you want.

Lakeview playground doesn’t have football
anymore, and a bunch of Lakeview kids play basketball at Lakeshore.

Per JPRD

quote:

The waiver fee for Jefferson Parish residents choosing another playground is $25.00 The waiver fee for non-Jefferson Parish residents is a yearly fee of $150.00

My son is 18 now and far removed from the REC and Travel scene but I remember when he was 9-14 there was drama between JP kids and OP kids switching over to play across Parish lines....a few of those kids were on the East Bank LL teams that made it to the LLWS

i seriously have not heard a more sad statement in my life...but the saddest part is its true.

I kinda feel bad for you that you have not experienced this type of camaraderie in your life.

Have developed many relationships with guys from other playgrounds & backgrounds growing up.

The JPRD model was great for decades. It’s time for a pivot for sure I think.

Lakeshore is doing well. But it has one of the smallest footprints of space. Also, Girard just won Dixie Youth championship this past summer.

wtf is wrong with that? kids simply want to play with and against other kids that are working hard outside of practice and actually care about the game.

I don't completely buy into that statement.

At the 11/12 year old level? Sure... I see kids on travel ball teams putting in extra cage time... and I rarely see that from rec kids.

At the 7 year old level? There is no difference - no difference - in quality, committment to practice, etc, among 7 year olds in travel vs rec.

There IS a difference in committment among the parents. The parents of 7 year olds who play travel are more committed than the parents of 7 year olds who play rec... but that's not becasue of the rec model. That's because those parents of 7 year old travel ball kids are simply white flighting away from rec.

Which again... their money their choice. But let's not act like the on field competition of 7 year old travel is vastly superior to 7 year old rec.

Every travel ball org in louisiana pretty much has fundraisers and sponships.

That helps with the cost. It doesn't help with getting the kids 4 nights a week to practice far away.

A few years ago, the kids I know in St. Bernard played in travel ball teams based in... St. Bernard. Now, the kids go practice 4 nights a week in Metairie, westbank, Mandeville, etc.

We live in a society that is consantly being divided and torn apart. Your quote is a perfect example of that.

The bigger factor is most JPRD sports programs are run with bare minimum effort by the parks. Also, most of the amenities- gym/fields- are limited to their tax paying constituents. Gyms are often off limits or have very limited free play schedules and fields are often locked up.

Again, if competitive models were set up for all levels of skill were set up and well maintained facilities provided for access; JPRD could become relevant for all levels and make going elsewhere unnecessary.

There's also the factor that open gym / open parks have been known to be trashed by misbehaving kids.

Facilities are being locked down because unless there is someone out there watching over the kids, the kids wreck it.

Open gym at these playgrounds have been that way for years. You have to pay someone to be there but the day time supervisors spend their day maintaining the playground and he’s fields.

Most playgrounds allow you to use the outdoor facilities when you want.

Whoa!!!! They wanna get rid of Johnny Bright? When I was a kid, Girard, Bright, Lakeshore and Metairie Playground were the forces in area football and baseball in both Orleans and Jefferson . East Bank and West bank...although Terrytown was stout as well

What sucks is that when I was a kid back in the 70s and even 80s when my youngest brother played is that the playground circuit was stout. The parents were very much involved.....it ' s what you did on Saturday mornings and afternoons....sometimes Sundays as well. There was none of this travel shite like baseball and soccer today and I guess football as well. The travel teams like NORD Lakeshore Crusaders and NO Raiders and the like, were like All Star teams....guys like Leroy Hoard, etc when they were in Middle School.

What's funny is that these travel teams don't really produce the better players ....appreciably.

Some kid named Jose is going to get Braxxton's spot on the high school team and go straight to AA and AAA ball.

No doubt. But at the end of the day it’s a service I pay taxes for. If those services aren’t going to be provided, remove it from my property taxes. Let private organizations run the facility and charge for services.

Bright always had solid teams when I was coming up in 90’s. But they are kind of situated in a weird area that I’m not sure has grown much the last 20yrs. And Not sure what’s in the water at Girard but I’m sure they are pulling some Bright kids too

Same with Delta. It’s so close to Miley, who wouldn’t pick Miley over them if they had a choice.

And their best player was from Lakeview.

That team was basically a travel ball team that was playing rec ball at Girard, and picked their all-star team from that said travel ball team.

Lakeshore just beat the shite out of Girard in 11-12 football..

That's the big question, right?

Is the service supposed to be unlimited park access, or is the service supposed to be a rec league with limited outside access?

I'm not sure turning it over to a private group is the answer... althiough I get the tax dollars point.

Just yet another example of lack pf parenting causing a few kids to f it up for everyone else.
