WBRZ Article

quote:

The bill by Republican Sen. Kirk Talbot of River Ridge was a “tort reform” effort and was a priority of business lobbying groups. In earlier hearings at the capitol, lawmakers had agreed to change the rules for lawsuits over car wrecks, aiming to limit damage claims against insurance companies and other businesses. The proposal would require use of jury trials more frequently, so lawyers had to argue damage claims to more people than a single judge; cap certain damages that can be awarded; limit when insurance companies can be sued directly; and increase the time accident victims can file lawsuits to provide more time for settlement negotiations. Supporters argued the law would lower car insurance rates, which are second-highest in the nation. Opponents fought back, changes would keep people from getting money needed to cover their medical bills and could drive up costs for courts.

We have like the second highest car insurance rate in the country and it’s ridiculous.

I can’t stand JBE. Adding this to the list.

Well colored me shock...

The Republicans were idiots for not bringing something to his desk before his re-election so he could say I didn’t support or go against any tort reform bill

Wasnt there a loophole that negated most of the intent of the bill anyway?

The argument is it wouldn't lower rates enough for people who don't already purchase insurance to wake up and purchase it. So LA rates would still stay high.

I would like to see more reform on torts overall. It's bs to have insurance to just over pay all the bs. And the lawyers all still get paid.

They did. But the senate judiciary committee was stacked with JBE supporters that blocked the bill from ever reaching the floor.

Simple guess is that way too many judges make way too much money by blanket awarding cash to anyone

This is Louisiana after all

Cant reign in any kind of corruption in that state for any reason. Always some reason its stopped.

If you voted for JBE then shut your mouth. This is what you voted for. He was a Plaintiff Attorney before he got elected & he will be one after he is done being governor. Plaintiff Attorneys bankrolled his campaign for situations just like this. If you really wanted Tort Reform he should have been voted out last fall. Sad.

Were lower premiums guaranteed? Or was it just wishful thinking that they would be? I'm assuming the latter.

You think a veto and an override happen in the same day? It's Friday and I'm assuming Louisiana's legislature is a part time job which means they aren't in session at all times to do it.

Everybody is really going to hate him when we don't go to Phase 3 because of the supposed spike in Covid cases.
