If I'm not mistaken, he won by a little over $400 a couple weeks ago. The guy that came in second was a pretty formidable opponent and kept the game close.
He was never in danger of losing that game though unlike today. The reason he was so close at the end was because he missed the final Jeopardy question, but he only bet enough to still give him the win no matter what the opponents did.
The game today, he could have lost the game if he missed the question on Final Jeopardy, no matter what he bet.
Basically, he completely controlled the game you mentioned, and he didnt today.

I started DVRing Jeopardy because of this guy. Just watched today's episode about 20 mins ago.
He is impressive. Going into this week he was over 800 correct answers. I like how he plays it. He either knows it or he doesn't (opposed to having to think about it).
According to wikipedia when he was 7, he was given 5th grade math and he skipped the 2nd grade. In HS was a C student because he spent his time remembering baseball stats.
This was maybe 10 episodes ago but when Alex was talking to each on, James talked about a trip to Russia with his little girl. They ended up having a category that was Russia related, dude ran the table on it like nobody's business.

But, can he beat the Beast?
He already destroyed the beast a few years ago. It should be on youtube.

The final score was closer, but that guy from a few weeks ago actually made a poor wager in FJ. The guy playing today made a much better wager. It resulted in a larger margin of defeat, but it guaranteed that James had to get FJ right in order to win.
By far his two toughest opponents though.

a master of trivia is not a genius. he is a savant. he is a basic computer with better RAM than the rest of us.
A genius is defined as someone with natural ability or capacity. The amount of information he knows is impressive.
His has a high capacity of information and is able to quickly access it. I'd consider him a genius.

A couple of weeks ago he had to get Final Jeopardy question right as well. They both got it right and James barely won.

It was the April 29 game: LINK
The other guy, Adam, finished with $53,999 and James finished with $54,017.
Going into that game's final, James had $33,517 and Adam had $27,000.

I believe he's only had 2 (maybe 3) games that weren't runaways before Final Jeopardy.
The guy from yesterday was pretty good. While most of the questions that he answered weren’t that difficult, he did answer a few that were moderately difficult and he seemed to be extremely quick with the buzzer. If he had come on the show when James wasn’t the champion, he probably would’ve won a few games.
If I were the Jeopardy producers, I would announce that anyone who forces James to answer the Final Jeopardy correctly to win will be invited back on the show when James is no longer the champion. This will at least give them some hope.

This is stupid, why else would you be posting a spoiler? It's not a spoiler.

Huh?
If you haven’t yet seen the episode or the clip (the ep hasn’t yet aired)- then how isn’t it a spoiler? What would you have me do, post that clip without a warning??
