quote:

If you love the USA, you have to love Sherman. Without Sherman, there is no USA.
quote:

Benedict Arnold then returned to the Hudson, where General Gates had taken over command of the American army, which had by then retreated to a camp south of Stillwater. He then distinguished himself in both Battles of Saratoga, even though General Gates removed him from field command after the first battle, following a series of escalating disagreements and disputes that culminated in a shouting match. During the fighting in the second battle, Arnold operated against Gates' orders and took to the battlefield to lead attacks on the British defenses. He was again severely wounded in the left leg late in the fighting. Arnold himself said that it would have been better had it been in the chest instead of the leg. Burgoyne surrendered ten days after the second battle, on October 17, 1777. In response to Arnold's valor at Saratoga, Congress restored his command seniority.

I've been wanting us to recognize Sherman more since I was at LSU. There's a picture of him in Hill Library and that's about it. Love this idea!

I don't think we should be naming anything new after prominent figures in the Civil War, regardless of which side they fought for. To me, the Civil War was a complete failure by the leaders of our nation on BOTH sides to do what was in the best interests of its citizens and stop them from killing each other by the hundreds of thousands. BOTH sides were wrong, and neither side gets to claim moral high ground in the execution of the war itself.

In the decades following the war, we experienced a rash of monument building and naming of things that were nothing more than post-war spasms from both sides, trying to extol the virtues of their particular side. We inherited what was named and built from those people. I'm not in favor of removing anything they did.

BUT, I'm sure as hell not in favor of naming anything new after Civil War figures, north or south. It's 2017. We shouldn't be naming things after people who butchered our own people, regardless of the side on which they fought. Doing so introduces strife to a nation that is still trying to heal itself from the deep cultural scars of that war. It doesn't matter if you're black or white. There's still hurt feelings that do matter here.

Carville's backing of this idea is nothing more than a prominent alum seeking to use his personal influence on LSU, and promote himself. He says it's about Sherman. It's about Carville. As it always is with him.

Uh no. If we're going to remove Confederate statues I don't want that terroristic murderers name anywhere near LSU.

I will acknowledge that he taught at LSU for a year...but that doesn't mean he needs a street named after him...besides, he commanded the CSS Alabama

General Barrow

Here's the guy that the street should be named after...

it's a straw man and a pretty effective one when you think about it...I've laid my position out earlier in this thread and at least to my way of thinking, it's pretty thoughtful...

and for all those folks who are going on about Sherman's army going through Georgia and the Carolinas...go back and read the last few chapters of Band of Brothers some of the antics of E/506 PIR were similar...along with most of the Allied forces moving into Germany in 1945...

Sure I do.

I was making a joke, not an argument.

Unless you have me confused with someone else, but you did quote me after all.
