Our coaches goal, and they are parent coaches, is to develop them where they MIGHT get a chance to ride the bench in high school.
What in the hell kinda goal is this?

Gotcha. Yes. I agree.

I don’t understand why the argument here has to be an either or thing with rec or travel. My kid and every kid on his team play both travel ball and rec park ball. I’m sure that is the same for a great number of kids throughout the countr
Just dont make the boys play if they donht want to, thats all I ask. I know people who wouldve been great ball players that hated it because of dad/mom.
Lake Charles is king dick of travel ball.

quote:correct. Not shitting in a ditch is a pretty big motivator. Without baseball, or soccer in some third world countries these guys are destined for a life of poverty. You play baseball here then decide if you wanna go be a Dr or lawyer.
more than that is their desire to GTFO of those islands and baseball is as good of a shot as they have

The biggest take away, high schoolers wanting to jump into D1 need to understand, they aren't competing for spots with other high schoolers. They are competing for spots against 20 and 21 year olds with 2 or 3 years of college experience.
And that’s what all this travel ball was for. Constantly pushing kids to be better than they have to…better than the current competition. Doesn’t ensure success, but I don’t think there is an alternative. Steroids?

Out of the blue he tells me he wants to continue playing baseball and tryout for the HS team in a couple years. This floored me, I thought he was done w baseball. So if he works very hard and improves he may have a shot at making it, if he makes it he will prob ride pine for most if not all of his years. But I would be more proud of him than the first, it takes courage to give things a shot and fail.

I'll give my travel ball anecdote from someone who has had a ton of family members who were ALL about softball, now going on the second generation.
I think for starters as long as the kids actually like it and its not interfering with other parts of their life, there are worse things they could be doing.
Both sides of the "talent will get discovered, travel ball or no" argument are sort of correct in my experience. For two generations now I've seen the more talented player be WAY less involved in travel ball but go further with their "career"..... but the less talented player had no chance at sniffing a college scholarship for ball without working as hard as she did. I see the same thing occurring again... one of my nieces is a top 10-15 player in the country and did some travel ball but not a ton, she will go wherever she wants to for college... the other will definitely play in college but isn't elite like the other, but she is doing something ball related every single day almost year round.
So for me on the "investment" front if you're just talking dollars and cents (and time) its probably not a good one, but if your kid can have fun, stay outside and active, and also possibly get a scholarship in the process its kind of a no-brainer. But I think there are so many kids doing travel ball now that the college scholarship thing isn't going to be as good of a bet as it used to be.

Your failure if you live anywhere near a major metro area is overestimating what value your kid gets from playing "better" competition. You know what would make a difference? Not letting your kid stay up and only get five hours of sleep before a tournament because you wanted to stay up in the hotel lobby pissing everyone off and letting your kids run wild.
Steroids at this age is called Testosterone and protein. Stop feeding them bullshite sugary snacks and full fat Prime/Gatorade, and fill them full of meatloaf and calcium. Problem solved.

Until rec ball decides it wants to get in line with the age requirements it will continue to decline.
Most importantly , when rec decides it wants to help in the maturation of a player then it will continue to decline
Yes I can elaborate !

Yea, that’s when they’re young…mine’s 18 now and everything has flipped from being a motivator (and ensuring he eats/sleeps/has gear) to simply being supportive. I still go practice with him, but I can’t offer anything besides trying to keep his expectations in line with the work he puts in.
Scary stuff though. Being in a support role is a pretty helpless feeling.

On my travel ball team growing up when we were like 11-12 some parents thought their kids weren't getting enough exposure so like 5 of them all left to a bigger team, all the way across town -- hours of driving during the week to multiple practices.
Fast forward 10 years, everyone out of college, look back, not a single soul from that travel team played D1 ball lol

This one time I spent thousands of dollars, travelled across the southeast, and gave up my weekends for softball.
True story.
Glad my kid is done with that crap. Crappy coaches with no life, crappy parents. travel ball killed rec ball. Shame, now high school has become pay to play thanks to travel ball.
