My wife and I work together. We have the exact same position and same base salary. She will make less than me this year because we are having a baby and she is choosing to take extra time off in addition to her paid vacation time.

because it doesn't happen, that doesn't exist. Men simply hold a larger share of the big time, high level jobs compared to women.
Again, this is not where the 80% comes from.
You're right, men on average have better jobs, but this 80% thing comes from same title/job.
Its a fact, but its not really due to sexism. Its mainly due to women being scared to negotiate salaries.

Men tend to work in jobs that are more dangerous and more physically strenuous.

It happens at my company because people go between our company and our biggest supplier so fluidly. I could go from rep to manager to an outside position back to a higher management position and make more than someone who didn't do that outside position.
It has nothing to do with male or female though. It's just the fact that every new position comes with a raise.

Salaries are rarely public information at most companies.
I have no idea how much the women at my office make that have my same job. I know some guys that make less and some that make more, just because of where they started, etc.
We have a huge range for each position and I know every year I negotiate hard for more money.

I don't know that answer, but maybe because there are a lot more in the applicant pool for professional type jobs.
And maybe we're just smarter.

Me too. My wife makes a lot less than me. She also works far fewer hours in a less stressful job.

Well, I had to attend some bullshite seminar at my office about pay gap and the women claimed it was for same titles and cited stats.
I'll eat my crow.

You are absolutely wrong here. On a how things work podcast a few years back, they broke down all the numbers. 80% is the average of all male salaries vs all female salaries. It was 4 or 5% when accounting for experience and position. Additionally, I believe it was nursing in which men were paid less.

For sure. I wasn't disagreeing, just showing a pay gap that exists isn't because one is a man and one is a woman.
If she makes less for that job she got over you, it's because she didn't negotiate a better salary, not because she's female.
Males would never be hired if it worked that way.

So I like Fortune Magazine usually and they say the adjusted pay gap is 94 cents on the dollar.
So that is definitely just women being too scared to negotiate IMO.

in 35 years with my company I have never taken any time off other than vacation or a few sick days, most of the women I know that have the same job have taken paid years off for various reasons
