Yeah, except there was this little TS storm about 6 years ago that sat over Houston for 6 straight days dumping about 30" of water non-stop.

This is a good read and gives a great perspective on the power of the Mississippi river. The author gives a lot of data on how much it rained to cause the flooding.

Rising Tide: The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 and How It Changed America

The Great Flood

I live about where the red dot is on the left pic. Scary to think the Mississippi River could reach this far.

quote:

The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the most destructive flood in United States history.
This flood extended across Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas,
Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. At one point the river was approximately 80
miles wide near Vicksburg, MS.
The flooding was a result of persistent heavy rainfall across the Central U.S. starting in August
1926 and continuing through the spring of 1927. As unprecedented amounts of run-off from the
different tributaries combined, extreme water levels churned by wind overwhelmed the levees
protecting the Mississippi Valley floodplains, breaching the flood defenses as the water traveled
southward. It was not until August 1927 that the last of the floodwaters had flowed into the Gulf
of Mexico

who cares. We don't need 50+ inches of rainfall a year. would do just fine with 40-45 especially this year since we've had 60-80 over the last 5 years

That's not how this works...

Thats how averages work. you have some drier years then some wetter years and then some avg years and it all equals out

The only reason we would need 50+ in of rain a year is to recharge the aquifer

I'd put money that its plenty full right now and was full enough in June also

In the early 2000s when we had all those dry years it didn't create some catastrophe

I always look at the river levels when I drive over a bridge. The Comite at Joor has risen a lot in the last week.

All I can say is last year was wet as hell, yet my grass wasn't growing well at all (yard or pasture) because of the lack of rain we had for the first 6 months of the year.

So no, that's not how it works. That's how, as you said, averages work. But it's not how anything else works.

I mean, by that logic, getting 6" of rain at one time is the same as getting it over an entire month. It's still 6", right?

As a farmer, I would think you could grasp this concept and look beyond simple averages.

It’s been insane. It rains every damn day.

And not just light showers. We’ve gotten least 6-8” a week the last 2 weeks.

No shite - because we had one of the driest June on record but that doesn't mean it has to rain enough to catch up to your yearly avg for your grass to grow

You take an inch from August and put it June 15th and your grass is fine or if we had gotten 2in in Feb - again your grass would be better
Even with the lack of rain - if we would of had avg temps if wouldn't of been as bad

my whole point is we don't 50+ in of rain for anything so why are you worried being 16in under your yearly avg
