But it's broken. I get the heels arms race - that gives the illusion the leg is longer and, generally, increases a woman's superficial desirability to the average man. So the mere fact they are wearing heels is to compete with other women for the attention of men. The incessant need to overspend on them and the elaborate design is their competing with each other, but more for other women's approval than men.

It is sort of the same with makeup. Restrained use of makeup to even out the complexion, hide minor flaws, bring out the eyes, lips, etc., are all consistent with evolution. When they pick up on the "overdo" it, the exaggerated eye makeup, extreme false eyelashes, big puffy lips, overdone plastic surgery, this is a fracture in that evolutionary system - they are no longer competing with other women for men's attention - they are competing with other women for women's approval.

And the vast majority of women (*Note - I mean the women engaging in this behavior) simply do not believe this or they do not care.

Take the classic example of the shoes I led with - certainly, a man might notice the artificial lift with the heels, but the shoes themselves? If a woman is attractive enough, a man might not even notice if she has feet, much less the shoes on them.
