They could also just get stuff done with much less red tape.

You haven’t been to a factory that stamps steel. They are more automated. They still have to have huge stamping machines and other metal working equipment.

There are fabrication processes that aren't feasible without large presses. They are still used in the US and even NASA relies on one that was recently renovated to forge large parts. As these threads usually demonstrate, most are essentially clueless about this stuff, no grasp of modern or past manufacturing processes.

taking pictures can get them thrown in jail.

They probably have to turn their cellphones in before entering the site each day.

Because everything's made out of plastic now instead of metal.

Back then it was a privilege to work in a factory. Now everyone is scared to work in factories and think they're entitled to college degrees.

Yes back then the 1% rationalized that your great grandfather worked a more mindless job than his grandfather. Organizing production is not about quality of life. Lucky to have a job. Oh sure, that's pure capitalism.

Well, there's not much of a demand for 14" naval guns anymore

As computer systems automate more, there is less work.

Us labor is replaced by asians and Mexicans and automatons.
Automatons are faster, more accurate for many tasks.

Yea, what you can't see from those pictures are the armed guards outside the factories ready to crack the skulls of anyone complaining or walking off the job with less that their minimum 15 hours/day in.

That doesn't explain the loss of large scale manufacturing
