And people are NOT happy about it, including the playwright.

quote:

The casting of a white actor as Martin Luther King in an Ohio university production of Katori Hall’s acclaimed play The Mountaintop was “a disservice to not just Dr King but an entire community”, the playwright has said.

If he is the best actor for the job, he should be picked.

That's what you get for trying to make James Bond black.

As far as I know, no. The director is black as well and cast a black man and the white guy mentioned to play King, as it's a multi-show production. So the two actors will be switching out for different scenes I assume.

Damn right.

Bond is the white MLK. You can't have him.

The comments under the story are pretty much the mental gymnastics I'd expect

quote:

There is a difference when you are the oppressed race. Martin luther King Jr.'s character is a chance for a black actor to shine and they denied that opportunity as so many opportunities have been denied to black artist, actors, dancers, ballerinas.

If a white guy is good enough to play Jesus or Moses, then he's good enough to be MLK

I hope it's Christopher Walken. The man was born to play MLK.

So if a white person in Alabama paints himself black for Halloween it causes an uproar and now a white person can't play the role of a "historic" figure because he is simply white and not black? "Some" folks are beyond fricked up.

That play rips on MLK as it is, I couldn't imagine with a white cast.

This shite is reduciouslous.

A production of "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?" in community theater and the play is put on with an all-white cast originally as written.

It reminds me of the scene from "Amadeus" where they are rehearsing the opera and have removed the ballet score from the production so the cast is dancing to no music.

The Emperor has the ballet music returned by his understatement of "Humor me."

Wonderful film moment.
