150 minutes of exercise a week does them really good. As long as they're not exercising for say 30 minutes a day 5 days a week and 'treat themselves' to ice cream after every workout it pays off.
they're halfway there with exercise, now they need a good diet or at least knowing what not to eat to complete the circle.
Yep, I have a friend who just graduated with a kinesiology degree and does research with obese patients at Pennington. Their exercise recommendations are 150 minutes of low-intensity cardio a week (or 75 minutes of high intensity, but the obese can't really do high intensity) and 2 full-body weightlifting sessions a week. That, combined with a healthy diet, sees their patients HUGE results.

Def not a waste of time. They have to start somewhere. As long as they are eating better they can lose weight just walking and then increase exercise as the weight starts coming off.

Doing anything is always better than doing nothing.

Regular brisk walking reduces the risk of heart attack by the same amount as much more vigorous exercise, such as jogging.
See I like the wording of regular brisk walking. There is nothing brisk about it. Yet, I admit I was not thinking of the psychological benefits and the lower b/p.

we just did articles in class for diet, nutrition, etc. for patients and Dr. Champagne from pennington came down and critiqued our presentations.
Definitely thorough research they're doing there. great its close to new orleans as well because we definitely need it...

No walking is great exercise

I'm sure this right here plays into the results BIG TIME. This should be focused on more...too many (esp women) just think it should be all cardio, cardio, cardio.

If you want to know about the effects of walking talk to Dr. Tudor- Locke up there. That's her main focus of research. She's borderline obsessed with walking, ha.

No doubt. I'm happy to see people really delving into it and trying to find scientific solutions.

IMHO, they should at least try riding a stationary bike to get their heart rate up. Walking is good for their joints, and it is better than hovering over a bucket of KFC, but it really hasn't done anything for the fat people I know. Diet works better

Should go without saying but some people do think they can walk their way to healthy weight. The most efficient method of 'burning more than you take in' is not taking in so much, obviously.

This is why fatties avoid the gym a lot.

Walking is actually one of the best ways to lose weight for the obese.
If done at a brisk pace and for extended periods of time it gets the heart rate up and holds it steady which burns fat.
Correct me if im wrong but I believe walking fast is even better at burning fat than running(for the unfit) because it keeps the heart rate in the more fat burning zone where as running may be fueled more on glycogen and blood glucose, leading to exhaustion quicker.
Tell your fatty friend to get a pacer watch and try to get his heart rate up to ~150-160 for an hour. He will see results as long as he eats well too.

Running or even jogging a mile burns very few calories more than walking a mile

There was a pretty heavy chick a while back who used to walk the lakes @ LSU. She graduated to jogging then running until eventually she had a hot little figure. I remember reading about her a few years ago.
Point being, if they stick with it, it's not a waste. Getting more exercise than you usually do, at any size, will help out..

What kind of watch is this? Is it a heart rate monitor for the wrist? I'm in the market for a heart rate monitor.
