I see really large people walking at the gym and they are strolling not exercising. Other than the fact that while walking they are not eating I question if they are wasting their time. In order to see benefit don't you have to get your heart rate up for 20 mins?

They are burning more calories walking vs. sitting on the couch.

And you have to start somewhere. Doing 10x400's at 375 pounds isn't exactly where one begins to lose weight.

Ummm, yes. I had a roommate one time who was fat and his comments were, "Dude, I don't know why I'm not losing weight. I walked on the treadmill for 45 minutes."

Fatty.....

Do you want them to be jogging? seriously, that is all a lot of them can do. You have to start somewhere.

Fatties don't have the endurance to do a real workout. Walking is better than nothing.

I am sure it is harder for them but they might try to pick up the pace just a tad. I am the type to go all in on a workout. I just see them strolling like they are walking to travel not trying to exert themselves.

If you are obese, walking will probably get your heart rate up, they can't exactly run a marathon you know.

No.

Going for a walk is a very therapeutic exercise. A 45 minute walk is very good for the body, especially so for those that are obese.
quote:

HEALTH BENEFITS OF WALKING (PER THE MAYO CLINIC):
-Helps lower bad cholesterol (LDL)
-Helps increase good cholesterol (HDL)
-Lowers your blood pressure
-Reduces risk of (or helps manage) type 2 diabetes
-Helps manage your weight
-Improves your mood
-Helps you stay strong and fit
-Regular brisk walking reduces the risk of heart attack by the same amount as much more vigorous exercise, such as jogging.

Besides that, shame on you for judging someone trying to better themself. If they are obese and going for a walk, you should applaud them for attempting to do something about it.

Is there more intense exercise that will burn more calories in a shorter amount of time? Of course. But walking has its place, too. Not all exercise has to be high intensity.

I quit thinking less of larger people walking/riding years ago, at least they are out there. I ran a lot and saw the same ones out there daily, good for them.

I have bad knees and I occasionally speed walk. If my knees are good I run on the balls of my feet. I can run about 5 miles and my knees are done.

150 minutes of exercise a week does them really good. As long as they're not exercising for say 30 minutes a day 5 days a week and 'treat themselves' to ice cream after every workout it pays off.

they're halfway there with exercise, now they need a good diet or at least knowing what not to eat to complete the circle.
