What I'm trying to figure out is what our takeaway is supposed to be, period.
A 16 year old killed his pregnant 17 year old girlfriend in Indiana. It's fricking tragic. With that said, what are we supposed to be talking about?

I’m not sure why you would consider that a paradox. In Louisiana, it’s perfectly legal for me to cut off my own hand. If you cut off my hand, you’ll be charged with Aggravated Second Degree Battery.

Indiana will likely try him as an adult. At least I hope that's the case. In other states, he may well be considered a juvenile and released in a few years to continue living his life.
