If I were in the market for a single engine anything it would undoubtedly be a TBM 940.

Do you still have that 180?

There's actually an instrument most planes have in them nowadays that knows the places glide ratio and will show you which airports in the vicinity you're flying at calculating your altitude as well to make an emergency,no power landing at.

What does it say when there isn't an airport in range? "TOUGH shite"?

If you have a forced landing in sub-Saharan Africa you should probably stay in the airplane. If you're in North Africa, you may need to run and hide.

I fly on a TBM 850 pretty often, usually in the right seat. Our pilot is a very experienced pilot who is retired from flying big metal. The owner has multiple planes including a couple mid size jets.
The TBM is fast and efficient but it is also cramped, outside of the power plant it can be a bit unreliable and parts are crazy expensive and can be difficult to get. Parts at major checks being shipped to France and back, also $40,000 for an A/C repair that required interior to be completely stripped and another minor part that was OOS except 1 item in the world located in South Africa and costing 5 figures.
Compared to the cessna and bombardier jets in the fleet this thing is a nightmare in this regard. Lastly after riding in this plane and quite a few others it is very easy to see how a piston pilot moving up with no jet experience can get in over their head with this plane. Things happen fast, the workload is higher, shes got tiny landing gear and she needs to be flown, all the way to the pavement, she won't just ease her way onto the ground like a smaller piston plane.

Once the airplane gets ahead of you, Bad things happen really fast. Then they multiply all the way to the ground. Usually at high speeds and odd angles.

Sat next to a 777 pilot for Fedex on my flight home Sunday night from Charleston and the dude wouldn't shut the frick up about how much better the 777 is than other aircrafts.
I thought of you, in a good way though

can't stand guys like that, hey! did I tell you about how awesome the 777 is? it's got TAC, satcom, cpdlc, a couple of crew lounges...…
jk, if you sat next to me on an airplane you'd never know I was a pilot, now if you started talking LSU sports, that's a different matter
