re: Is there a more useless group of employees than those working at Lowe’s?

I definitely miss the old neighborhood hardware stores. Those frickers knew everything.
If they laugh sincerely I'll buy a roll of overpriced duct tape from them, just out of gratitude.

Unless you already know the exact part or part number to get, don’t expect much help from the guys at Lowe’s and esp Home Depot. Guys from Home Depot were so bad they couldn’t even put in the sku# when I pulled it up for them last time I was there. Total shite show

I’ll pay you to come with me next time I have to deal with these assholes. Your knowledge of Lowe’s SOP would be very valuable to me

Surprise, surprise, no employee in the entire store is certified to work the vertical saw
Ironically, this is a great way to get attention at Home Depot from multiple employees. Get fed up and turn on the saw to cut your own plywood

9 out of 10 times, regardless of store the code is 1234# or 1234*…can’t remember which

think a lot of it is a reflection of the management of the store.
This. My local HD is *far* more helpful than my Lowes. I only go to Lowes if there's a part that HD doesn't carry, or for Maipei tile supplies.
Other than that, my Lowes is useless as football skates.

Throwback to that thread a couple weeks back in which 80% of posters said their father and/or father in law retired from being a brain surgeon/captain of industry/3 star general at 50 and now works at Lowe’s

I thought of this one too.

I’ve had better help at Lowe’s than Home Depot. Our Lowe’s seems to be pretty decent and haven’t had issues in-store or with appliance installation (in two years we’ve ordered from them a fridge, a dishwasher, and a deep freeze).
If there’s something more niche that we need we have a local hardware store up the road that we can hit up. But we don’t need it too often.

Stines’ employees are starting to be like that as well. Ohhh! Yes, I said it.

We have a Lowes and a HD across the street from one another about a mile from my house. I go to the HD most of the time because it requires 2 left turns at lights while the lowes requires 2 left turns and two right plus crossing a 5 lane road that is BUSY. The employees at the Lowes are far better because they actually exist...I am convinced the HD is a test store to see if they can exist without ANY employees and no lights. I haven seen an actual cashier in the HD not at the service or pro desk in 2 years.

Still do. We have one in a new store but the place has been in existence since the 50s. They have morphed into more of a gun and outdoor clothing and home decor store now but they still have a respectable old hardware store at their core. Hours suck though...close at 7 during the week, 1 on Saturdays and do not open at all on Sunday.

My local Lowes has maybe 3 people total who know how to find things and can actually contribute something to the work on a project. I usually find what I need on their website, locate the aisle and bin locations, and pluck the items myself. About 25% of the time items are not where the website indicates and some searches come up empty. I usually ask a random employee at that point and hope for the best.

Must be one of their better locations...in my experience if they ever speak at all it is to tell you theyre out of eerything on the menu...

We still have several hardware stores around central arkansas. Ace, true value, and a handful of independents. Sure is nice.

I gave 11 years to Lowes. Was on my way to being a store manager. I used to love the job. The employees and the customers. Enjoyed helping someone with a project. But then there was a shift in Lowes, when they fired 1500 Assistant managers in a restructuring some time ago. It never seemed the same after that. They started finding reasons to fire the well paid very knowledgeable people and hire in cheap labor that had no experience. I took a $8 pay cut to start over and change my career. I remember being so worried about that. Now I thank God every day lol.
But it was very sad going into the store after leaving and seeing the way the store was ran and the over all appearance of the stores. The standards have fallen so badly.
I was coming here to post something similar. Once upon a time, Lowes kept the "local hardware store" mentality and hired people that had knowledge and paid them well for it; it was also supplemented by bonuses and commissions depending on the department. When I worked there, there was training for anything you did not know, and it was a path to advancement. Like you said, somewhere they shifted to the big box mentality; they dropped starting pay, took away incentives, and it has been downhill ever since.

Lowes and HD suck now.
Ever since they quit owning HGTV and DIY networks, they quick trying to peddle stuff. Like the yard / landscape shows or like replacing doors / windows etc., the minions would all be shopping there doing Saturday projects. Now, you can’t get anyone to help you let alone find an employee.
For my kid’s birthday (he’s in his 30’s) he wanted a Dewalt set of tools - not the driver and drill but one in the cage. I asked the nice lady in the contractor services counter talking on speaker phone about her boyfriend with her cousin and making plans to go to the Club later in the evening. She was nice enough, and actually told her cousin to hold on she had to do something with a customer. She paged someone. After 20 minutes of no one showing up, I told the nice lady that I looked and HD had the same thing at the same price.
- but in reality I just jumped on Amazon and ordered it and had it within 48 hours.
I miss the project desk at HD too.
20+ years ago I decided to build a deck. I went to the project desk, the very knowledgeable employee looked it up and rang up all of necessary lumber, hangars, screws, runners, concrete blocks, etc. he even made sure I had the right power tools to complete the job. Paid him and about 20 minutes later, I was loaded out and headed home to build.
- Alas that don’t work now.
- I bought 2 dishwashers last year and all the guy kept saying is - “you know we ain’t got none in stock, right?”
Lastly, not only do I blame society and the younglings’ inability to open their mouths to communicate with the general public, I blame COVID. Everything went to shite after March 2020.

They make like $9/hour What do you expect
I’m not talking about the part time associate that’s only there to load up mulch for the grandmas. I’m talking about the “professional” sales people in flooring, cabinets, pro services, etc.
They make like $9.50/hour. What do you expect?

So I see you’ve never been through the drive thru at Popeyes!

I’m at Lowe’s (in Nola) wayyyyy more than any person should be and I’ve never had this happen. I guess that’s the because of the Nola part
It's not the checkout guy, it's another Lowe's employee with a clipboard that talks to people waiting in line. I've also seen them set up a table out front and give away free hot dogs/chips/water so they can attract people for a discussion.
I always assume that they just farm out the work to C-team contractors who are willing to take on work at a discounted rate.
