Whenever the laws of any state are broken, a duly authorized organization swings into action. It may be called the State Police, State Troopers, Militia, the Rangers, the Stormtroopers, the Klingons... or the Highway Patrol. These are the stories of the men whose training, skill and courage have enforced and preserved our state laws.

Like I mentioned earlier, I have always thought being a cop would be fun.

You don't know anything about me. I think it would be fun helping people and making a difference. Doing the right things to help people and take violent criminals off the street. I more than likely will ever become a cop. I have a good job. Just think helping people would be fun.

And before you say it, yes I know there are other ways to help people and when I feel like I find one that is right for me I will do what I can.

What is the major differences between regular police and state police?

Most of the special ed students from high school are now local police officers.

None of the special ed students from high school are State Troopers.

I have a lawyer friend that claims that the LA Wildlife and Fisheries agents have more power than either the LSP or Sheriff/deputies. Can any OT LEO's comment on that?

Depends on the state. In Louisiana the state police is a cut appove in qualifications, pay, and training. However, There is a lot of nepotism in the LSP.

I can only speak to Georgia's version of them - DNR (Dept. Of Natural Resources). They have much more authority in matters of search and seizure. For instance, they have the legal authority to check vehicles and coolers without having to gain permission or a warrant. They can also seize anything possibly used in a hunting or fishing crime, including guns and vehicles.

True in Louisiana. Heck, Louisiana Game Wardens issue more DWIs per year than LSP.

Please don't compare the glorified ticket writers of MHP to LSP. MHP are traffic cops only and they are not even in the top 5 in pay in Mississippi. LSP has statewide jurisdiction in all police matters not just traffic.

My advice is to work for a professional department with high standards. Yes it will be harder to move up but you will have quality people to work with and to back you up.

In Mississippi both Gulfport and Biloxi are excellent departments where the officers make over 40 a year and can easily make 50 a year if they work some OT.

Thanks for the answers. Does seem like less people hate troopers

I've been working for DPS/LSP for almost 27 years. If you're interested in a career as a LEO, you might want to look into applying with the DPS Police, then working your way into the LSP.

I know they can roll into pretty much anywhere they like without a warrant. They will swap the memory cards on your trail cameras with the quickness too.

State Police is a lot harder to get into that the normal police force. You also hardly ever see a fatass state officer and they conduct and hold themselves much better than other forces.
