Person I was talking to earlier really used "urban" to describe a neighborhood. Coincidence she was a female liberal?

Seriously?

Urban
Suburban
Rural

Descriptors that have zero to do with demographics other than number of people.

In the sense you are describing, no, but the terms "urban" or "inner city kids" are always used to describe ghetto kids.

The word itself doesn't have racial connotations.

You should have called her out and asked if she meant a black area and to not sully decent words with euphemisms that years down the road people like her will decide are "racist" and ban everyone else from saying.

Better off trying to explain something like that to a brick. That's how dumb this chick sounded.

Urban has always meant the opposite of country to me. Somewhere in between is that weird Suburban thing.

If urban means ghetto today, it's probably because those who take urban to mean ghetto live in areas that evacuated their urban areas, and ghetto took over.

I live in the middle of an urban area and it is far from ghetto. I mean Manhattan is an urban area. Just call the ghetto the ghetto, big fricking deal.
