Didn't know this was a thing. Bet people that work there all live in TN cause no state income tax.

The New Madrid earthquake had a lot to do with it. The course of the river cut off that part of Kentucky from the rest of the state.

But it looks like the nearest city is directly across the river in Missouri?

Louisiana and Mississippi have a bunch of bends that look like that, just not nearly as large.

Minnesota has one of those anomalies too called the Northwest Angle.

I'm not sure how it came into being but you have to go through Canada to get to it via dry land.

I tried to drive to one of these near Tunica, a part of Arkansas on east side of Ms River in otherwise MS... it was fenced off, no access.

That’s not exactly dumb. By holding on to that sliver of land, we get to control flow through the Strait of Georgia without Canadian interference.

By which metric is it more or less dumb than any other exclave in the world?

Kaliningrad says hello.

(It’s the little red area that’s part of Russia on the Baltic coast nestled between Poland and Lithuania)
