I needed a replacement social security card. They’re only taking applications in my state by mail. I triple check the form and supporting documents and mail them priority mail to the local office. They return my documentation within 10 days. Four weeks later, still no social security card. I call the 1800 number and after being on hold for an hour was told that no replacement application was ever filed but they can book me a phone appointment with the local office to find out what happened to cause the application to not be filed.

The next phone appointment was in two weeks.

SS has something that most DMV offices do not have. There is usually a handful of pitiful looking and non-healthy human beings in the SS office. At least you can snatch a number to be served. One can also make an apt online here.

I made an appointment online and was in and out in 15 minutes. Low hanging fruit to bitch about, though.
