Water is by far cleaner than it was 20 years ago IF the water treatment plant is within the EPA guidelines. The problem is that some plants take a chance and will not change the way they treat their water until they are caught and forced to change. The majority of plants are by far better than they were 20 years ago.

My job is to consult and help plants get and stay within the EPA guidelines.

As far as the pipes corroding, that is true if their chemistry isn't what it should be. We are currently working with plants in Louisiana, Alabama, Oklahoma, Arkansas and other states to teach them proper corrosion control. Most plants are putting on cement lined and PVC pipes so that corrosion is no longer an issue. Those that still have metal pipes can feed a proper corrosion product that is safe and prevents corrosion.

The case with Flint, MI was that they had no clue as to what they were doing and cut corners to save money. They were feeding corrosive water in to their system which corroded lead, copper and steel pipes. The metals in the water consumed the Chlorine which took the disinfectant out of the water. By taking the Cl2 out of the water it allowed bio films to grow in the pipes and other things like Legionella. Proper chemistry is the key and they didn't have that.

The regulations on tap water are more strict than bottle water.

While most water from Wells are safer, this isn't always true. Its crucial to get your water tested before drinking if you've tapped your own well.

Unless they are made of PVC which doesn't rust. Then your copper plumbing has its own antimicrobial effect. Given the advances in municipal water treatment, tap water is often safer than bottled (which itself is tap water before being bottled in most cases).

It depends on where the water came from. Water treatment can mostly get out turbidity (soil/clarity of water) and microbes, but the real problem is dissolved chemicals (lead, arsenic, wide array of refinery effluents)- these are really what causes long term health issues. The cleaner the water going into the pipes are the better.

h the craze of bottled water taking over and millineals looking at you like you just put a turd in your mouth when you fill up a glass of tap water to drink...have regulations, ect gone down over the past couple of decades? Growing up all we drank was tap water and never had health issues because of it. Why is it so looked down upon now? Is the bottled water industry the biggest rip off to hit the market?

Tap water is actually regulated. Bottled water could be sitting out in the sun, leaching estrogen-mimicking compounds into your water. Also, very little regulation.

All of that is tested for and can be removed from the water. The technology and chemistry has come a long way. The only problem with all these new guidelines is that the cost to make water is always increasing which will be passed along to the customers. We are taking out disinfection by products from Cl2, algal toxins and etc. We are taking out to the ppb which is very very small trace amounts.
