Try the drive through window at McDonalds. They give you no napkin most of the time, unless you ask for one.

I will watch people at some of these fast food restaurants pick up a stack of napkins, 20 or 30 of them. WTF
I'll grab 100 on my way out and stick them in the door of my truck. Never know when you'll need a napkin

I try not to grab "too many" napkins at places. But I'll get a messy sandwich every once in a while and realize I'm on my last napkin. To some of those workers "a little mayo" means "squeeze the bottle as hard as you can and wave it back and forth 15 times".

I always get 4 at Chick-Fil-A. But they have them out in the store with a mountain of right-sized ketchup packets along with the straws.

Jimmy Johns wount even give u a bag unless you specifically ask for it

Who cares? Just go up and ask for one if you need one.
I think it's smart business to do it that way.
Same thing goes for water and chips/salsa at restaurants. A smart business person would only have that brought to a person upon request instead of wasting money giving people extra water they won't drink or an extra basket of chips they won't eat.

WingStop puts a roll of paper towels by the drink machine. They keep it classy.

If a busy fast food restaurant gave away an extra pack of ketchup to every customer, it would waste almost a case a day. Given that a case of the dip ketchup costs about $30 bucks, that would add up to over 10k in a year. If you were a business owner you wouldn't feel the same way
This guy gets it. Customers don't see past their own noses. They think they are the only ones there. Owners/managers see every guest and have to make decisions accordingly.

To a point, this is understandable. But when I feel like you are nickel and diming me, it's a strike against you as a restaurant. Not saying it's an ultimate deciding factor. But if there are two equal places, and I don't have to ask or pay for every little thing at one, I'm going there over the other. When a customer starts "noticing", I feel like it's an issue. Now at the place I worked, I mostly noticed since I knew the protocol. With subway, it's kind of annoying. You don't even trust me with napkins by the soda fountain???

You aren't looking hard enough. Some places like zaxbys hide them at the drink stations

Subway has just as screwed up napkin policy as Waffle House does. I am convinced that the napkins used at WH are for midgets and toddlers only.

I agree with this. If you ask for extra ketchup or napkins, it will be given to you. Keeping things behind the counter and limiting the number of unnecessary items mindlessly placed into a bag can save a lot of money in a year. We've all be to a place where the person working the drive thru put 4 pounds of ketchup packets in a bag. That kind of stuff drives business owners crazy. Also, why automatically put ketchup into a bag if you don't know if the customer even likes it. Limiting access to napkins is ridiculous, but I completely understand keeping ketchup and sauces behind the counter. People walk in off the street and fill their pockets with that stuff without buying anything!

In college I used to steal plastic forks and knives from Chinese restaurants. Does this make me a bad person?
