I'm 31 and classified a millennial. I love giving speeches!

Especially ones where I can cause a stir and rattle a few liberals.

People at work always want me to deliver the slide deck to the customer.

Woman privilege will allow her not to give those speeches.

She is meeting with the professor because she doesn't believe she should have to give a presentation/speech for communication class/oral communications since she has social anxiety.
shy gal was in my Speech Class. I made her cry and leave the class by simply asking in a joking manner if she was nervous just before going up for her speech. Felt terrible. But yes. Some people are absolutely terrified of public speaking.

Social anxiety / social phobia is a real thing. However in my opinion it should not be used as an excuse, especially for a mass communications course. She should not have signed up for this course. Even without a syllabus she should have realized that this would involve communicating with others and some sort of presentation.

Now if this course is absolutely required for her graduation and she has a legit diagnosis from a psychologist or psychiatrist, then the professor should certainly consider offering an accommodation such as a presentation in front of him or her

I most likely have social anxiety and a terrible fear of public speaking, but I had to push through and overcome. When in college, I gave a horrible attempt at a speech, but I got better over time. I must have been bad because my speech prof (smoking hot, btw,) ended up seated next to my parents on a flight years later and the prof remembered me.

It's the Seinfeld joke - the number 1 fear is public speaking. Number 2 is death. So most people would rather be the guy in the casket than the guy giving the eulogy.

I used to work with phobias and anxiety. Social anxiety is obviously very real and I'm sure the thought of doing this is really causing distress.... but the number one way to increase a phobia or anxiety is to avoid the unwanted stimuli. If the professor grants her this excuse it will be a HUGE step backwards for her condition.

A girl in my class peed herself during a speech. For some people, that fear or anxiety is crippling.

Of course you have shitheads take advantage of it, but it doesn't mean it's not real for some people.

Absolutely true. The gold standard for treatment is cognitive behavioral therapy with exposure.

The only way to get over it is to do it, and to know a lot about what you're talking about. Being well informed about your subject is the best medicine for being nervous about talking about it.

You may never feel as comfortable as someone with a more outgoing personality, but you'll be able to do it.
