Without a doubt, Richard Pryor was a pioneer into the vulgar comedy acts.

Sorry but he isn't; he just made it more popular. The pioneers were Lenny Bruce and Redd Foxx

No ... but that is a personal decision.

Maybe I've only heard the later stuff, but I don't find him funny. Smart and angry? Sure.

Me and my dad use to listen to him. Came "this close" to peeing in our pants. Gawd - that guy was funny. He had balls too - to say what he did, when he did. Timing is everything.

I agree with everything Dijkstra has said.

It seems to me that Pryor has the same effect in 2015 as the Beatles in that there is a certain kind of dimwitted impulse to claim that they are/were overrated. I don't know what drives this but it makes it easy to spot those who don't know dick about shite.

I named my cat Lillian because of his bits about his drunk father because I love them so much. "I know you want to leave me! But, I refuse to let you go, Lillian!" Also, she's not allowed to use the phone or go outside either.

That is one of my favorite bits...ever.

That's the new rules of the house:

1...Lillian cannot use the phone
2...You cannot go outside, either...cannot go outside ever again.

Now, put up the rules Lillian. You abide by my rules and my regulations....and the rules say, No phone and no outside. If I come home and a fireman is putting out the house I say, "how did you find out the house was burning?" "We got a call from your wife"...I kick your m-fing arse. You're in this house to stay...you'll burn up in this m-fer.

I love me some Mudbone.

I have his "greatest hits" album, but outside of those bits, I never found him to be overly funny.

I think Bill Burr is always consistently funny. I also enjoy Norm McDonald's stuff.

One of the early "observational" pioneers was Mort Sahl.

A regional (Southern) comic that was early in the stream of consciousness style was Brother Dave Gardner.

His older stuff, when he was in his prime and on drugs, was stellar.
