Is Northern Ireland its own country?
No, it is not. It is entirely equal to England, Wales, and Scotland in terms of citizenship, defence of the realm, and economic status. It uses the british pound, is guarded by the Royal Ulster Constabulary, and very much leans toward London.
The Republic of Ireland OTOH is it's own country, with its own army, different currency (the euro), and very much takes pride in leaning away from London. There was a bloody civil war fought to break away from London during WWI. Their declaration of Independence was modeled after the US.
ETA- those seven signatories were promptly round up and shot by the British in 1916 during the Easter Uprising. There's a big monument to them in the GPO in Dublin, bullet holes and everything still there.

And the Isle of Man, and the Bailiwicks of Guernsey & Jersey.
Interesting fact, if you are born on the isle of Man, you get a British passport, but don't enjoy visa free travel throughout Europe, as it is a British overseas territory, and not a proper part of the United Kingdom. Last I checked same went for Jersey & Guernsey.

It is a country within the United Kingdom.
I'm confused by the downvote of this and why this thread is still going.
The United Kingdom is made up of 4 countries (England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland). Each of these separate units practice a certain degree of autonomy (differs in each area) while the UK Parliament is in charge of other things.
Maybe people are getting hung up on the term country. How about "semi-autonomous province"?

Well that sounds retarded.

So is it, or isn't it, it's own country
It is not, in the sense of how one typically understands "country".

What is the United Kingdom referred to as?
What is England, Scotland, Wales, N Ireland refereed to as?
I had this discuss with my cousin who lived there for 8 years and his answer was about as not an answer as the not an answer there has been in this thread.
Is the UK a fricken country and the other 4 just territories of that country, or are they all their own country, but have some stupid deal where they are governed by certain things they've agreed upon called the UK?

A parliamentary constitutional monarchy made up of a union of countries that practice various levels of autonomy?

Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom but not part of Great Britain.

Originally England was it's own country, and Scotland was separate as was Ireland. The Normans invaded Ireland in the 12th century, and set up camp there until the Tudors conquered it in the 16th century, extending British control of the island until independence in the 1920's. Henry VIII of England came to hold title of the King of Ireland, and eventually passed down that title to James VI of England who eventually also came to hold title of King of Scotland. Wales was annexed as a part of England in the 1500's.
The three different sovereign kingdoms weren't legally united until 1707 by an act of Parliament.
tl:dr they all started separate but eventually came to be ruled by the same person, uniting all three kingdoms as a single nation.

So United Kingdom is the country, and the others are just pretending to be one for soccer purposes?
The UK is a member of Nato, not England.
The UK, not England, compete in the Olympics
The only thing that hints that England, Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland are countries are soccer and rugby teams.
They can call them what they want, UK is the country, the rest are just territories in the UK.

We have a similar dynamic in America with the territories. Puerto Rico, Guam, et al field their own Olympic teams. In the UK, the four main countries come together for the Olympics but they split on soccer and rugby. It's just as another poster said earlier - different levels of autonomy.
