Lafayette is the third largest majority white city in the Deep South
Don't they have any black people in SC?

It's best to get the data direct from the source.

No Lafayette is not up there with those two yet. But the demographic is changing. White population is decreasing and pretty sure once it gets below 50% it'll be like the others. But currently so long as you stay out of 70501, basically everything east of University Ave in particular you won't have many issues.

How long will Laffy knights be able to puff how wonderful it is?
If Jxn is BR in 20 years, is BR Laffy in 20?

Lafayette has a +90% solve (arrest) rate with homicides. That's a huge factor in decreasing violent crime.
Also, crime isnt just most prevalent in upper Lafayette, it's even more specific to parts of the Northside. A few streets one way are the other can be the difference. Except for anything near the Thruway. They need to bulldoze that entire swath of land.
Downtown has def. changed after dark. I blame a lot of that on McKinley being a relic. That crowd has migrated to Jefferson and a select few clubs have provided them a home.
So, as a former, let's say employee, of that area...take my word for it that I don't see Lafayette in the same universe as BR or Nola, and don't expect it to be anytime soon.

Lafayette is pretty safe and not close to the crime of BR, NOLA, or Shreveport.

To the OP, I think this map will help you figure it out.
Violent Crime per Capita in Lafayette Parish
You can actually zoom out to compare to Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Sad to see all that red in BR. Spent most of my elementary school years there in the early 80s

My wife and I were returning from a long weekend on the beach yesterday, coming through BR around 6:00pm and naturally I-10 was a parking lot.
We got off at College Dr and proceeded up Foster to get to 190 and the old bridge.
Good lord, I’m not sure even New Orleans is worse than that part of BR.
Glad I had a pistol in the vehicle.

The answer to your question is "no". Feel safe in about 95% of the places I go within the city limits. It's really a great place to raise a family. I grew up on the West Bank, and while I never felt threatened living in the Nola metro area (90's/2000s), things have drastically changed in the last 3 years down there. Had dinner in the French Quarter this past May, and my head was on a swivel the whole time. And this was at 6pm.
Like others said, the bad areas is really confined to the surrounding streets along the Evangeline Thwy and north of Johnston near University. There's a small pocket off Verot near Pinhook that's sketchy, but that pales in comparison to any bad area in Nola or BR.

quote:South Carolina is 27% black (5th highest % in the US). Charleston has been all gentrified and most black people got pushed out to North Charleston, a separate city. The middle part of SC is mostly black.
Don't they have any black people in SC?
