Is it your forte? Do you pronounce it "fort" or incorrectly as "for-tay?"

"Fort" is the correct and preferred pronunciation.

"For-tay" is not. "For-tay" has kind of creeped in because people generally mispronounce the word.

In forte we have a word derived from French that in its "strong point" sense has no entirely satisfactory pronunciation. Usage writers have denigrated \'f?r-?ta\ and \'f?r-te\ because they reflect the influence of the Italian-derived forte. Their recommended pronunciation is \'f?rt\

Better to sound like a dumbass than to be one.

For-tay

Ain’t even embarrased.

How is it a mispronunciation if that is what everyone is using now? Language evolves.

Say ‘fort’ and no one will know what the frick you are talking about.

If you say "fort" with a little Alex Trebek action on it, they will know you know your pronunciations.

In a sentence with context, people will understand you're talking about a speciality and not a trading/military outpost.

I have always pronounced it "For-tay", knowing that "Fort" is the proper pronunciation.

Why???

F-them...that's why!

If you want to reflect the Italian influence, the accent is over the o as in forte

Should I refer to you as a "PED-nt" or a "ped-ANT"?

If the English vernacular pronunciation is for-tay, then how can you claim it as preferred?

It’s not like pecan where there are 3-4 regional dialect pronunciations, even though the most similar to the original Algonquin is puh-cawn.

Both are correct

quote:

How do you pronounce forte? In forte we have a word derived from French that in its "strong point" sense has no entirely satisfactory pronunciation. Usage writers have denigrated \'f?r-?ta\ and \'f?r-te\ because they reflect the influence of the Italian-derived 2forte. Their recommended pronunciation \'f?rt\, however, does not exactly reflect French either: the French would write the word le fort and would pronounce it more similar to English for. So you can take your choice, knowing that someone somewhere will dislike whichever variant you choose. All are standard, however. In British English \'f?-?ta\ and \'f?t\ predominate; \'f?r-?ta\ and \f?r-'ta\ are probably the most frequent pronunciations in American English.
