If you levied penalties for data breaches, then you would lower the probability of companies actually reporting that they had been breached.

Is it time for companies to face financial penalties when their data is stolen? Would that cause companies to take this more seriously?

I don’t think it’s an issue of companies not taking it seriously, it’s just a really difficult problem.

The threats evolve constantly and the company has to win every day, forever. A hacker only has to conjure up some new exploit that works once. And there are thousands of hackers trying to do this all. the. time.

I don’t know what the answer is, but financial penalties are simply going to get passed on to consumers who’ve already had their data compromised, so they get screwed twice and zero problems get solved.

The banks or whoever lends money to the fraudster who used your info should be penalized.

97.5% of breaches are caused by dumb employees falling for phishing scams. Sue the shite out of the company for hiring dumbasses and enforces cyber hygiene.

Minimum $100 to every person affected every time a company breach occurs.

Theoretically, that is supposed to happen through loss of business by the consumers. In the old days if you had money in a bank and someone stole your money, would we use that bank again? I don’t think so…

Unfortunately, we are too lazy to bother not using companies that lose our data.
