Is it time for us to put down our dog?

We have little dachshund mix that's not doing well. He's only 9 or 10 but has really bad neck and back pain to the point where we can barely walk. Vet has him on prednisone & gabapentin to help ease his pain.
When he takes his meds he can walk okay, but these meds aren't meant to be taken long term. He's been on them for like 4 months now. We've try to slowly take him off of them but he's absolutely miserable if he's not drugged up.
I think he's starting to go insane too. He stumbles around in circles in a weird daze.
Some days (like today) I cant even give him his medication a small pill wrapped in little piece of cheese because it hurts him to open his mouth and chew.
I think I know the answer to my question, I just need OT's confirmation. I'll be okay, but my wife will have a very hard time with it. She rescued him 3 or 4 years before we started dating.

Yeah man, it's time.
Our little dog had congestive heart failure, and the vet basically said that he was in pain all the time, and the meds just made it bearable. That's no way to live. It sucks to make that call, but really, you're doing the nicest thing you can for it.

tried CBD? i know it's the latest snake oil craze but it may be worth getting a small bottle and giving it a shot. get something good though, not that gas station shite

It's time. It sucks, but it's time. Don't put the doggy through a bunch of unnecessary terminal suffering.

you do, but it won't make it any easier. sounds like your dog lived a long and happy life with you and your wife. time to let him go and relieve him of his pain. sorry man, had to do this exact same thing 3 years ago with our 4 year old dog with cancer.

Vets nowadays are cruel. Sounds to me like this dog should've been put down long ago and your failure to act is also an act of cruelty.

I have a lab Doberman who was diagnosed with spinal stenosis shortly after turning 10. The steroids fricked him up bad. Had to take him off and he could barely stand.
Had to figure something out because Vets have tunnel vision based on the way they were brought up.
Try CBD oil. It’s amazing the difference it is made in my dog. You’ll know in 3-5 days. I just put .5 ml in his food 2x per day

Someone else suggested this. At this point anything is worth trying.

Keep him on the prednisone if it’s helping. It will buy him a few quality months of life but will ultimately cause organ failure. When that happens, nature will take it’s course or you’ll know what to do.

The purpose of a pet is to bring the owner pleasure. If watching this animal suffer brings you pleasure, then by all means try CBD oil.
The dog should be put down. Do the right thing here and don't wait.

How do you figure out the right dosage? Obviously our dachshund would need way less than a doberman. What kind do you use?

The stumbling in circles is dementia, you are the pets steward, if he cant even take the medicine to make him feel better it is time, its the humane thing to do.

the wife and I have that decision coming soon for our 10 yo rescue cat. she developed a tumor we had removed about a month ago, and we noticed yesterday that it may be coming back again, and we cannot in good faith put her though another surgery - which sucks because she is a very sweet cat.
but we know we have given her the best life we possibly could, and it won't be easy - but we know if and when it comes to that, she had the best 4+ years of her life with us.
