Is it legal to open mail addressed to your address but someone that doesn't live there?

Obviously, asking for a friend.

If it's in your box, you own it.

How’s gonna know or punish you? I opened some recently then mailed it to the old occupant’s new address listed in the letter.

I received my only Christmas card by doing this one year. I even put it up on my fridge. A very nice family photo.

I believe that is not only illegal, but a federal crime because it involves the mail. But like someone else said, how would they know?

Speaking as a rural carrier, if I put a letter in your box and it didn't belong to you and you opened it, no crime committed, no jail time.. just politely replace 'opened' mail back in the box and raise the flag, I'll get it to the right address second time around..

The Kris Kringle defense from Miracle on 34th Street. A representative of our federal government deemed you were the proper recipient of the mail by placing it in your mailbox. Who are you to question the federal government?

If that were true I would be a rich mofo. One of the major BR hospitals apparently has screwed up a data entry in whatever system they use to print checks and print the POSTNET barcode on the bottom of their envelopes.

Without fail every 14 days I get checks in my mailbox for a business in Hammond as the USPS sorts mail based on that barcode. After the third time I called the business (whose name and address is clearly visible in the envelope window) instead of trying to deal with the idiots in accounting in the hospital.

The rightful recipient of the check told me to open the envelope and tell them how much the check was for so they could figure out which of their invoices it applied to. It was well into 5 digits. This has been going on for close to 4 months now.

Well you clearly didn't read the OP. I said it has MY address on it.

One of my carriers gives me my neighbors mail all the time. I walk next door and put it in his mailbox. Unless it's ammo and then I don't know what you're talking about

dude who sold me my house 17 years ago is being sued by Florida parishes bank. I open up their demand letters to him when they come.

I feel like if that’s their best effort to find the dude and collect their 750K then they get what they deserve

Ha…I did this one year at our last house when we first moved in. Received several Christmas family cards and I just put up on my mantle with all the others…had no idea who they were.

I'm the only owner that's ever lived in my house and I still get occasionally weird junk mail addressed to someone else - always makes me wonder if someone is using my address for fraud.
