Getting at least some of his money that he put into the house is a huge plus over renting and getting nothing back.

I pay $1500 a month for the house I rent. $1500 should get me a lot more house than what I've got. If I live there for 50 years I will still be paying rent and that rent would likely go up a ton over that time. That's why people consider it an investment. If I knew I'd be in the same city 5 years from now I'd much rather be buying.
