Yea what OP is describing is not suburbs which I would consider those to be.
Imo the suburbs of LC, Laffy, BR, and Nola all seem to be thriving. Maybe not as much as they once we're in the case of Laffy due to the Petro industry but LC has picked up that slack plus some.
In general the 4 south LA cities along I-10 are doing pretty good overall. Nola and BR will and have had their own set of problems but there is a huge thriving upper middle class there and the "small town" suburbs.
Now everything not along I-10 corridor
