I don't think the word marriage should even be in any government documents. Civil unions for all. Marriage is between you and your god
Marriage is an institution that predates religion and recorded history entirely and is recognized as a basic human right throughout history. There's a compelling state interest in it.

No thanks. It just seems the uproar is about States and the government recognizing it. The Catholic church will not recognize it in the next few lifetimes at least.

Agreed

There is nothing sacred about a state observed marriage. 50% don't honor their oath of till death do us part. I don't care what you call it but I think gay couples deserve all of the benefits afforded heterosexual married couples including but not limited to shared health insurance, life insurance beneficiaries and other various insurances that might be offered to married couples.
I do not think any religious institution should be forced to observe gay marriages.

I don't think it should be up to the government to decide.
I think it's completely wrong though. I'm against it.

Marriage is between one man and one woman
How do people justify saying kids need fathers in their lives when lesbian "marriage" is OK?

I mean what is "marriage"? It's a union of two consenting people. I am an aethist who was raised Catholic and my wife is a Catholic. We were married in a Catholic Church and she knows my views. I made her happy and I enjoy the pomp and ceremony.
I committed my life to her forever, just because I don't believe I'm a God or religion doesn't make my devotion to her any less real or consequential.
And just because one religion here or there teaches that two men can not be "married" it doesn't make their love and commitment any less real.
To me your religion should be a very private thing you take home with you not flaunt and force in public. We are in a country that has separate church and state and in the public sphere we are all equals.

I don't know the right answer, but a question that has to be asked/answered:
Can any two people be legally joined for financial benefit? Are we okay with that?
Off the top of my head, this is primarily the situation of the "spouse" gaining the benefits from the employer of the other person. Health insurance, life insurance, etc.
(and that person's kids)
These factors need to be considered...
If so... do they need to be "married", or can we just make it a rule that you can deem someone your partner for financial gain.

Give in to marriage and they will just find something else to bitch about

I have zero issues with a civil ceremony of some type that is insanely over the top and a kick arse honeymoon.
I'm also fine with the formation of a gay religion or any other religion that fully accepts gays and wants to conduct a marriage ceremony for them

Lots of lines getting crisscrossed. I don't have issue with the state recognizing gay "marriage." Seems like semantics. But the sacrament is a different story. And government has no say in that.

I don't care what they do, but they can't call it marriage. They shouldn't be able to change the definition of marriage
