Is an MBA really that useful?

Does it really open doors career-wise, or is it a pat-on-the-back "good for you" kind of thing?

It depends where you are in your career, what school you get it from, what you’re looking to do, and if you have a path planned out. Getting an MBA for the sake of it is a waste of time and money.

It all depends on:
(1) Your experience
(2) Where you got your degree
(3) Your connections
I would not get an MBA to try and advance your career

It looks good on a resume...but not as good as showing a work history of increasing responsibility/promotions.

That's heavily dependent on the school and what you consider useful. They can be extremely useful.

I have one. It was nothing I couldn't have learned on the job. It might be useful if you're coming in from another field, like engineering. If you already have a business background, waste of time unless you can get into a top business school and work the prestige angle.

I’m getting one now. It’s a check mark on a resume to even be considered for a lot of jobs.

It's absolutely useful. If you can get it while you're young, it'll look great on a resume and decent MBA programs usually have a ton of connections that can help set you up after college.
