What's the difference between an MBA and an Executive MBA?

As many have answered the big obvious difference is cost.

EMBA students are often sponsored by their employers; which gives the University incentive to charge more.

The other big difference is the curriculum path. EMBA programs typically have a set curriculum that is often pretty broad in scope. Exceptions certainly exist.

The big selling point for EMBA’s historically is that the classes are held on evenings or weekends targeted at people who are already working professionals. The idea being that you get the needed flexibility to continue working full time. Another bonus is you get to draw from the experiences of other working professionals in your class as opposed to the utterly naive kid who is straight out of undergrad and hasn’t worked a day in his/her life.

Not currently in management. On the sales side of technology in the medical field. More of a specialist than I am the salesy sales guy, but I do still rely on hitting my number so that is always a question every year.

My opinion: the potential value of an MBA air EMBA for you depends largely on what direction you want the future of your career to take.

If you want to move into a more management role or even into an executive position, it would be a valuable asset, ESPECIALLY if your company will pay for a large portion.

However, if you see yourself staying on the sales side of the house, my experience in Med device and Med Tech tells me that it won't be helpful since at the end of the day, your net worth and value will always be linked primarily to your ability to learn new tech, convert docs, and hit a number.

This isn't a dollars and cents question.

I make more in sales than I would if I had the MBA right now.

I am looking at what others have experienced in it opening up career opportunities. Sometimes you take a job making less if the path takes you to a better outcome in the future.

Guys in your field are at a quasi-disadvantage. I had a couple in my class at Texas when i got my MBA. You make absurd money in your position and moving up or switching jobs would likely cause you to make less in the short term. Golden handcuffs are real.

It all depends what your career goals are. If you plan to stay in your sale-type role, then its a waste of time and money.

I encourage my employees to get mba’s so they won’t be stuck working fryers the rest of their career

So if you can increase your pay 25k/year for 90k that's not worth it?

If someone is dumb enough to give you a $25k/year raise for it than I guess so. As an employer, an employee is not worth 25k/year more because they have an MBA.
