Used to have 180 tags.

Quit doing it because they are worthless now. Gator farms killed us. Good for them. They can have the nasty bastards.

Louisiana's alligator population has increased from under 100,000 to over 3 million in the past 50 years. They harvest @ 25,000 a year.
Farmers are required to release 10% of the eggs they collect into the wild when the alligators reach 3 to 5 feet long. They release over 38,000 alligators a year.

We have an alligator problem.

think in south LA they are. They are everywhere and the season is only about 30 days.

From what I hear, people are no longer swimming in Lake Arthur and the Mermentau River, and that’s a damn shame.

Who thinks having a bunch of alligators is a good thing? And why do we pay for wildlife management programs that make our own lives less pleasant? It’s bullshite.

don't see a problem. If it was, LDWF would increase tags.

Well we’ve seen what happens when the government doesn’t govern fish and game, people act like children with no daddies.

Way over population in south Louisiana marsh.
Specially on WMA and protected areas.

Just checked the LDWF site and see they issue between 25K-35K tags a year for gators. So that's a lot of gators being harvested yearly.

Wonder how many of those tags are turned in

We're overpopulated in MS in my opinion. Our season is only 10 days long and you can't bait. That second weekend of the season, the gators are very finnicky. You can't hardly get close enough to em to throw a hook at em.

I wonder if states and municipalities cover up alligator attacks as much as they can (and crocodiles in Florida) because they don't want tourism affected? Like the mayor in Jaws

Attacks are extremely rare. Grown men rarely ever get attacked because we are bigger than their typical prey. I have swam in ponds/canals with big gators and never worried...if we had salt water or nile crocs people would get attacked all the time.

Wasn't that way in the 70s in Louisiana - might have been deemed endangered back in the day

The population of alligators, regardless of the number is a non issue. The biggest problem with them is them getting hit by cars.

bull shite. The biggest problem is them harassing me when I'm fishing in the marsh. They are absolutely overpopulated and an absolute nuisance when fishing with a popping cork.

But that certainly isn't anything that can't be addressed when the dumb lizards swim right up to the boat.

Don't let toddlers swim in the marsh unsupervised in the summer

I went to New Orleans for a wedding in November and saw multiple dead gators along the side of the road around Irish Bayou.

When Alligators outnumber opossums as roadside carrion, there are too many.

It's my understanding if you are a hunter and turn in tags, that will lower the amount of tags you can get the following year, so it's in their best interest to fill their tags.

They could certainly be deregulated to some degree. State issues tags for trapping isn't going to do much because they aren't worth anything. Just a deer-style license / tag system would work.

Lots of problems with it though, primarily stupid coonasses shooting rifles on the water.
