Puerto Peñasco (aka "Rocky Point) is 200 miles from Phoenix
Its only about 65 miles south of the border. Thousands of people drive it every day. We have done it several times. Never had a minutes problem. It is a little like PCB to me. Nice but very developed and gets crowded.
I drove our RV and a 26 foot center console to Bahi Kino 9 years ago and left the RV for 6 months. The boat is still there, a friend retired down there. We drove my old Tahoe down there 7 times in that 6 month period. About 5 hours from Nogales. Never had a minutes trouble. There is a sizeable ex pat community there, mostly Canadians but also some Americans. They live there full time. They laugh about the danger. It happens for sure but if you are not a criminal you are pretty safe.
We drove to Juarez and flew to Ixtapa several times over the last 10 years and rented a car and drove to Puerto Vicente. Have been told we were sure to die. Only problem ever encountered, and its the same as it has always been in Mexico, are the cops with their hands out.
About 6 million Americans vacation in Mexico every year. Including those who were in the process of committing a crime 120 were murdered. Thats 2 or so per 100,000 or about half the rate in the US. The reason the state department and the media makes such a big deal out of it is because it requires the expenditure of resources and political capital when an American is murdered abroad...when it happens at home its not as big a deal. Life is a series of near misses and tragedies. Ships are safest when tied to a dock. Thats not why ships exist. Life is too damn short to live in fear of what might happen. Don't go to Mexico because you do not want to, not doing so because there is crime is just silly. If you involved in drug trafficking Hahira Georgia is dangerous.

I planned on booking a trip to Puerto Vallarta for next year. Is that a bad idea?
No. Unless of course your goal is to get involved in drug trafficking and then yes, it is a very bad idea. about 4 million foreign travelers visit Puerto Vallart every year. Many websites claim none have even been murdered. That is probably not so BUT the lack of stories about it indicate it is rare. It can certainly happen, it can happen anywhere. Not going out of fear is no way to live. Not going because you don't really want to is understandable but living life scared of what might happen is, in my opinion, no way to live at all.

I went to Ixtapa and the neighboring fishing village of Zihuatanejo back in 1987 or 88, It was just okay, and super cheap, but really enjoyed the fishing and the fresh food, but it always felt weird because there were federales posted everywhere. Apparently, sea-turtle egg harvesting was a big problem in that area as it was/is? considered a delicacy.

70s game shows were the best for trip prizes. Winning a trip to NOLA, Miami, LA, or Vegas seemed so exotic and cool back then.

This is true. I used to listen to a fishing show from Port A from our house in Georgia on AM radio. I thought Port A had to be the most exotic place a person could ever hope to see LOL.
Same thing with listening to WWL from New Orleans.
Same thing with listening to Larry Munson call UGA games from exotic and foreign locations like Lexington Kentucky and Baton Rouge. Hell, even Jacksonville seemed like a loooonnngggg way from Taylorsville, Georgia!

Every gameshow in the 70's gave away a trip to "Fabulous Acapulco". Now, you never hear of anyone going there for vacation.
And Honeymooners used to go to Niagara Falls

I stood in a wedding in Michigan around 2000.
Recovery home in Arizona in the early 2000s for nine months.
Couple of trips to Florida.
That's most of my travels.

Puerta Vallarta have gone to shite
I went to Puerto Vallarta in 2019 and it was great. Supposedly the safest Mexican tourist destination at the time. Haven’t looked into if it’s gone south from then but we never felt uneasy anywhere we went.

12 year old boy killed in Cancun during shootout between rival drug dealers
quote:
A shootout between rival drug dealers on a Cancun beach turned deadly when a 12-year-old boy was hit by multiple stray bullets as he sat in a lounge chair, according to Mexican officials.
The incident happened Sunday in the municipality of Benito Juárez.
According to prosecutors, the boy, who was not identified, was a local resident and does not appear to have been targeted by the gunmen.
"Attackers arrived by sea, aboard a jet ski shooting at some people presumably in dispute for drug sales," prosecutors said in a statement.

And Amnesia.. every character on every television show in the 1970s and 1980s, including Luke Duke- got amnesia and then had it resolved by the end of the episode .

Acapulco the show on apple tv is really good. I'll remember it like that instead of the murders now.
