I have a job doing accounts payable and receivable pretty much, but after about a year of doing this I would like to try to become a legal assistant. I'm also in school. After I graduate I want to try to become a paralegal or something similar

Don't write off this kind of career if you can get on at a refinery or plant.
Great benefits and will make a good salary with plenty room to advance into cost accounting/finance/purchasing if you continue with school.

Being familiar with accounting and spreadsheets can help you as a paralegal as well. My paralegal puts together my disbursements and has to be familiar with our accounting software and loans we guarantee at the bank.

The problem a lot of law firms big and small is that business management is a completely different skill set. You might be a great attorney or paralegal and absolutely suck at getting the bills paid on time and keeping the books balanced. In fact I would say this is the case more often than not.

The lawyer talks to the client, gets all their information, then gives it to the paralegal, who drafts all the documents while the lawyer hits the golf course. Later the lawyer signs off on it and sends the client a bill.

And the lawyer pays all of the overhead, including the malpractice insurance, is the one who is sued for malpractice or gets charged with ethical violations even when it’s the worker bee under his/her control who screws up (and rightfully so), and who stresses over making payroll.

Any lawyer who has a great paralegal is terrified of losing her.

I’ve know big law paralegals can make good money, $80k range, but I’ve never heard of a paralegal making $150k. Guess a white shoe firm in NYC maybe. Seems a stretch.

Yea - her salary is literally unheard of as a paralegal - but it's a very successful firm in the area and she's been there forever. I see proof, too, since I do tax planning for her and her husband.

She’s either got some dirt on someone or is banging someone. No one is paying $150k for a paralegal.

i read the ODC cases every month and the number of attorneys who can't use basic subtraction to do a proper disbursement is mind-blowing

You're bad at math aren't you? Your posts per day rate is double mine and then some. I also exceed my billable requirement every year.

Ahh the post count boom.

You don’t just sometimes read the board and not post? There are a shite ton of lurkers that never post. That doesn’t mean they aren’t spending hours a day reading threads

That’s all that really matters
