Is a Brand Ambassador a fancy title for commission-only, no salary sales job?

I think a lot of people like the catchy title and dive in but end up wasting their time pushing a company's product/service for very little compensation.
What's the OT's opinion on the prestigious "ambassador" position?

If it's what I think it is, then a lot of them just do it because it legitimizes their amateur influencer effort. Small time style influencers with a few thousand followers on SM, stuff like that.
I think others are more legit - envisioning pro/semi pro athletes in non-lucrative sports (running, biking, skiing, surfing, etc.) serving as brand ambassadors for small but reputable equipment/apparel companies, stuff like that. AKA getting individual sponsorships.

I was a "Brand Ambassador" at LSU for a certain brand. I was basically just event staff but it was a nice title to put on my reaume.

I think it's more like an influencer position. You might get some free products and an affiliate link in exchange for wearing/using the product. On the highest level it's like pro athletes getting paid to wear a certain brand of clothing or watch

It’s a way for companies to get free advertisement.
