Context of the sentence was, "they are 55 thousand million in debt". Does any country or culture ANYWHERE use place values this way or pronounce numbers this way? The person claims certain economists and chemists say numbers this way. Is this why America is fricked?

If someone can correlate 55,000 million to 55 billion in their head it probably means they are good at math and aren't completely stupid and I have no problem with them existing.

Some people can't even do algebra.

Bruh, he spelled it right. This thread is full of trip on your own feet and stumble down an elevator shaft.

In some English speaking countries, a billion is a million million (what we call a trillion).

So they have to say thousand million for what we call a billion.

That's true.

It's all about how they structure their number system in their language.

For instance, the french say dix sept for 17, which literally means 10 7. (10+7).

And they say soixante dix for 70, which literally means 60 10 (60 + 10).

Then it gets really weird for 80 and 90, where they say quatre vignt, which means 4 20 (4x20) and quatre vignt dix for 90 or 4 20 10 (4x20+10).

UNFORTUNATELY I was in French class in highschool in 1998 and 1999...

Those are written/spoken as such

dix neuf cent quatre vignt dix huit - 1998

dix neuf cent quatre vignt dix nuef - 1999

And 2000?

Deux mille

Yes, if you're a fourth grader. That's like saying "a thousand grand"

You'll often see that sort of nomenclature in graphs and charts that show values in millions and cover a wide range, e.g., 55 million, 900 million, 2100 million, etc.

Try to buy a 40 with your fancy European pennies.

I'll take the Murkin money. It has God's name on it.

It's the same as 55 thousand trillion pennies.
There is so much math fail in this thread. 55,000 trillion pennies, would be 550 trillion dollars, not 55 billion dollars.

In theory, maybe. But there's no way that would work in practice.

I practiced it once: way too heavy to carry around and no one wants pennies anymore anyway.

Yes. 22 million cubic meters of pennies is heavy. Would not recommend.
