It's impossible to contact the IRS this year. I've tried multiple times.

I've talked with the IRS on the phone a few times within the last year. You may have to wait an hour but it is definitely possible.

Just don't fvck with the IRS. Call them 1-800-829-1040, they will probably leave you on hold for an hour.
This year I filed my business tax forms 1 day late. A month later, boom I get a letter with a $420 fine. Called them in hopes to ask for forgiveness (a laughable mentality) to which they told me "we will allow you to make monthly payments in 4 equal parts". If you owe them $, they will find the way to get it asap.

They just say they cannot handle my call at this time and to try again later.

I look at my bank account maybe once every two weeks, I would never catch this. There's no way the IRS has carte blanche to just start charging ridiculous interest on money they can deposit into virtually anyone's bank account. Those who paid the fines were probably too pussy to fight it.

I would write a letter explaining the situation to them informing and send it certified to your local IRS office, at that point you have a paper trail to show that you tried to correct their mistake. It may take forever, but at least you have proof that you tried to contact them.

That's because YOU made a mistake when filing.

If they make that mistake, those penalty rules do not apply

Write a certified letter explaining the issue, attach copies of bank statement and write them a check for the error. Also put your SS# on the check with phrase repaying IRS duplicate payment. Checks sometimes get separated from correspondence and the SS# on the check is how they track it.

Take it out and put it in an interest-bearing account and see if you can make some money off of it.

Congratulations. This is probably the dumbest advice with regards to finances I have ever seen.

I am a retired CPA. My "dumb" advice has saved 3 previous clients a lot of grief in dealing with IRS. This includes IRS agents telling me that is exactly how to handle the situation. So feel free to kiss my dumb arse.

Damn I got double charged on what I owed. They sent me a refund check for one of the payments within a month. They without a doubt know that they deposited your refund twice. Send that shite back quickly bruh before it starts accruing interest.

Submit the check immediately, but no later than 21 days, to the appropriate IRS location listed below. The location is based on the city (possibly abbreviated) on the bottom text line in front of the words TAX REFUND on your refund check.

That’s straight from their website.

The problem is that one of the steps is to call them and they just hang up every time I call.

You made contact. That’s all you have to do. The ball is in their court.

The penalties are insane. We were charged $1800 in penalty on about $1k in a miscalculated return in less than 12 months. We got them to waive most of the penalty and it was a "one time good faith" effort or some shite but we did nothing wrong and we just fell in a loophole they caught a year later.

Could it be some other sort of correction?

My dad gets Social Security and once got a one time back payment deposit for a missed adjustment over a period of time. It was kind of confusing, because it looked like they had accidentally deposited him twice. However, it was legit.

I understand you probably aren't old enough for SS and you are talking about the IRS. Just wanted to make sure the sources are the same. Are there any numbers associated with them that you can lookup.

I found this info.

quote:

If your refund was a direct deposit:

Contact the Automated Clearing House (ACH) department of the bank/financial institution where the direct deposit was received and have them return the refund to the IRS.
Call the IRS toll-free at 800-829-1040 (individual) or 800-829-4933 (business) to explain why the direct deposit is being returned.
Interest may accrue on the erroneous refund.
When the amount of the refund (paper check or direct deposit) is different than what was expected, indicating the IRS changed the amount, a notice explaining the adjustment is mailed to your address of record. Please review the information in the notice to determine if the change to the refund is correct. A toll-free telephone number is included on the notice in case you require further assistance.

IRS mailing addresses based on the city (possibly abbreviated) located on the bottom text line in front of the words TAX REFUND on your refund check:

Goodluck to you.
