Highly likely that this fizzles out soon, especially from the perpsective of open US involvement.
But who the hell knows when it comes to states with an axe to grind and their sponsored terrorists. Could be years but I'm sure they'll try something.

Likely for internal consumption. They can tell the Iranian citizens that they hit the US and that, if the US doesn’t retaliate, they say that they humiliated the US and scared it into backing off.

Yes there's a reason over 70% of the internet is blocked in Iran. They control what the people hear and see.
