Brooks' life wasn't worth 1/150th of a cent if he trafficked a fricking child. California or New York maybe, but Iowa? What the hell is in that GMO corn?

I don’t know about the judge but one of her rapists - the one she managed to kill - was black.

Thanks. I could not find myself a picture.

But prosecutors have argued that Brooks was asleep at the time he was stabbed and not an immediate danger to Lewis.

This is fricking stupid. Should she have woken him up and challenged him to a knife fight?

What a broken world we live in.

I swear I'm missing something and I read the entire article twice. There is no way shite like this can be true. If I was that lady or a family member of hers I would make it my life mission to try and remove that Judge and DA from their positions.

since she is a pretty good eye witness, he's not just "accused" in her eyes.

Was this case brought before a Grand Jury? The DA should have easily gotten this dropped if that article is accurate.

This really pisses me off. DA offices feel they have to do "something" so they basically force defendants to plead guilty to a crime despite obviously fearing for their life, and helping society out.

They have Grand Juries at their disposal for these exact kind of stories. I can't find whether they used one or not.

This is the correct answer.

Just when I’ve lost faith in the police, now I’m losing faith in judges and prosecutors.

If this is her second chance I'd guess she was far from an angel before this incident. May have something to do with why the DA brought charges. Being a juvenile her past record will likely not be revealed.

Apparently she had run away at 15 from an abusive situation with an “adopted” mother…possibly actually foster instead of adopted.

I get the argument that thugs will be thugs, the overwhelming majority can’t be rehabilitated.

But this kid never had a chance. She had already left an abusive situation, and was sexually trafficked and held against her will at 15.

How would any of you, or your daughters fare under this situation?

The Justice system is treating her like she’s a piece of gum they scraped off their heel, same way she’d been treated her entire short life…like a disposable piece of trash.

This is the same as sending the female CI into a drug deal unmonitored, then not only not giving a damn when she’s violently raped, but afterwards continue on with the previous charges…then offering the arrested rapist a reduced sentence.

Seems lots of people have lost their humanity.

Update:

She’s free. Unfortunately, she freed herself. She walked out of a residential facility on Friday morning, and then cut off her ankle monitor.

Polk County District Judge David M. Porter deferred those prison sentences, meaning that if Lewis violates any portion of her probation, she could be sent to prison to serve that 20-year term.

She could end up serving her full prison sentence.

get helping the victim pay restitution, but I couldn't stomach my money going to that family.

If the rest of the family isn't complete trash like the rapist, they would immediately gift the money back to the real victim. The law is stupid, but it exists, so if I had a shitty child that did something like that, I couldn't live with myself taking a penny of that money. I am not sure I could live with myself having created and raised such a horrible human to begin with, but some people are just naturally evil and gis raising may not have had anything to do with the him being a rapist. Hard to believe that though.

The judge peppered Lewis with repeated requests to explain what poor choices she made that led up to Brooks' stabbing and expressed concern that she sometimes did not want to follow rules set for her in juvenile lockup.

"The next five years of your life will be full of rules you disagree with, I'm sure of it," Porter said. He later added, "This is the second chance that you've asked for. You don't get a third."

Why didn’t the state just drop the case? She was a child. And she was raped by the dude. Nobody would have questioned it. Hopefully she gets pardoned.

Completely pathetic and sending the wrong message here. Pay the parents back in penny rolls for as long as you can hold out.

I would be really interested in knowing how the legal details played out here.

From my perspective, seems like she saw an opportunity to defend herself before he could do anything else to her. How the F did she end up getting prosecuted for murder in this situation?

No shite. What kind of fricked up DA brings charges against a rape victim for killing her attacker?
