Apple is adding an easy way to quickly disable Touch ID in iOS 11. A new setting, designed to automate emergency services calls, lets iPhone users tap the power button quickly five times to call 911. This doesn’t automatically dial the emergency services by default, but it brings up the option to and also temporarily disables Touch ID until you enter a passcode. Twitter users discovered the new option in the iOS 11 public beta, and The Verge has verified it works as intended.

Previously, if you wanted to temporarily disable Touch ID you’d need to restart an iPhone, wait for a few days when the device automatically prompts for the passcode, awkwardly use a different finger a few times to force it to lock out, or just disable Touch ID in settings. Apple’s new method is a far more discrete way of locking out a phone, especially if you’re in a situation where you’re worried someone might force you to unlock your phone.

Great, my two-year-old is going to go from inadvertently calling my emergency contacts list to straight up dialing 911....

I like this feature but if someone is going to force you to put your finger on it, couldn't they just force you to type in your code?

Well, they could physically restrain you and put your finger on your phone (not saying that anyone has done this), but that wouldn't really work for forcing you to enter your code.

I once had a dude stalk his estranged wife I was giving the dick to to my front door even after she threw her phone in the lake behind my house by using the tracking service on iphone

one of the things i want to do is design an app that you push it and it makes it impossible for your spouse or whoever else has access to your account to find you

I caught this in the article.

quote:

Unlocking phones with a fingerprint sensor is a hot topic for law enforcement requests, and police in Michigan even 3D-printed a murder victim’s fingerprint to gain access to a device. With fears over access to devices at border control points around the world, this quick trick will at least prevent Touch ID from being used until a passcode is entered.

It definitely helps with that.

Maybe don't let a two year old play with your phone. Pressing the power button 5 times in a row, then pressing the 911 option, is far less likely than them swiping left and calling 911.

Samsung has something like this in the note 4. You could tap the power button 5 times and it sends a text with a location and that you are in distress to a person of your choosing. Can't remember if it gave a choice to call 911.

Why would she do this as opposed to just taking out her SIM card, or turning off location services? Was she by any chance mentally retarded?

Also, legally speaking biometric based security is not given ANY legal protection.

They still can't force you to divulge information that may be incriminating.

That's literally built into every smartphone OS

He does it when he sees it sitting on the end table and I get up to take care of the baby. I'm not an idiot parent that puts games and movies on my phone for my two year old to play with.

Just by swiping around on there he can, at will, access the calculator and world clock map. He knows how to get to the search menu and pull up the emoji symbols. Additionally, he frequently gets into my emergency contacts list and calls "grandpa." He figured it all out in limited amounts of time with just swiping around.

Forcing you to type in a password violates the 5th Amendment. Using your fingerprint does not
