It's happening

quote:

A species of tick native to the Asia-Pacific region that potentially poses a disease threat to humans is now located in nine different states

quote:

he species — which is reportedly the first new tick species found in the U.S. in 50 years — is known formally as the Haemaphysalis longicornis, or the Asian long-horned tick.

quote:

the critters have since spread. New Jersey, Arkansas, Connecticut, Maryland, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia have now “reported finding the tick on a variety of hosts, including people, wildlife, domestic animals, and in environmental samples,”

quote:

While “no harmful germs have been found in the ticks collected in the United States,” the CDC reported, the tick has reportedly transmitted the potentially life-threatening spotted fever rickettsiosis in Asia. The species may also transmit “severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS)," which is "an emerging infectious disease caused by SFTS virus (SFTSV),"

What's meant by "invasive" in this case?

I can't imagine that a species of ticks is going to leave no room on hosts for other ticks.

Yup, looks like nine states are due for total destruction via forest fires.

It's intruding on habitats which it is not native?

It means they aren't native the area they are now being found and they are fricking up the ecosystem.

They probably came over on animals that were smuggled over here.

Arkansas seems out of place....all the other states border each other or are extremely close (Connecticut might as well border NJ).

When it's something from Asia ... or, you've obviously never heard of Kudzoo, Asian Carp and Asian Bird Flu.

Nothing good ever comes from Asia ... well, not nothing but you're smellin' what I'm sellin'.

Rats spread the plague, it’s only fitting a opossum will spread the Asian plague and kill us all

You are in for a treat when you have spotted fever.

You pull a tick off one day. Three weeks later you get a fever like never before and find yourself bedridden.

You don't always have the spots either.
