Controlled burns work fricking wonders on tick populations. Kill the under-story, kill the ticks.

ETA: I helped the wife and her gf do a salamander survey a few summers ago on a military base. Each and every survey I did, I ended up with at least 20 ticks. Long story short, controlled burns were forbidden on base, the tick population was out of control.
