SC is one of the cheaper states in the Union.
Never lived in Greenville myself, only been up there to go to concerts or events, etc. But everyone I know that has lived there seemed to enjoy it okay. Nice little Southern city.

First job out of college was in Greenville. Love it. Great outdoor activities, bar scene is a little lacking, but overall it's a really good area. Close to Charlotte for all your big city stuff.

Athens, Knoxville, NC, Clemson, Wake, NCST...are just a few hours away. Numerous smaller colleges around to enjoy football/sports on a smaller scale.
Been there 3-4 times the past year on school visits for my kid. My kid ended up at a local college there. She loves it. Plenty of good restaurants.....lots of local craft beers.
Downtown area revamped. Mountains and skiing just a few hours away. Beaches just a few hours away. Two to three good cities just hours away.
If I did not have another kid in high school and my family (really my Mom), I would seriously consider moving.

I live in Greenville, well Simppsonville to be more precise. The area is growing rapidly due to the influx of jobs to the upstate. BMW expanding to build the X7, plus the transmission plant in Fountain Inn that was finished 2 years ago. Most of the major amenities are located on Woodruff Rd South of downtown. You name it, it exists on Woodruff. It's the traffic equivalent of Vets in Metairie. If you're going to be at GHS, it's much closer to downtown than in the burbs. There a ton of new apartments in downtown (some still under construction). Rivers Edge apts are sweet, but I think even studios are a little more than 800.

Furman University Christian Knights as they were once called, or so the story goes.
Had a grandfather, aunt, and sister go there. Nice little campus. Aside from Clemson, I always root for in-state teams (when they're not playing SC of course) but I find myself rooting for Furman even against the other in-state schools (when they're not playing SC of course.

Heard that story several times...usually Wofford people.
She loves it so far. Almost had to take the Bama offer, which was quite..quite generous. Furman came through in the end. Made her year as Furman was her first choice school.
Will be there soon for parents weekend...probably take other kid for a visit to there and other places in October or Nov.

Greenville remodeled their "downtown" in the early '00s. Outside of that, the real attraction of the "Up State" is the wilderness. White water rafting, hiking, camping, etc.
Make local friends with common interests and you'll enjoy your time there.
Asheville or Charlotte may be a bit of a drive depending on your work schedule. I'd find a big older southern aristocratic house and live in Greenville.

Just to set the record straight, the Midlands of SC has 50X the accessible wilderness than the Upstate. Sure, they borrow some from North Carolina, but even so, it really isn't even close. Certainly not a deciding factor for relocation.
Greenville is a nice little provincial mill town all grown up. Look into some of the renovated cotton mills downtown for a place to rent. They are decent. Look up Centennial American properties and speak with David Glenn. He owns quite a few and might have what you are looking for.

Thank you so much for access to all this information. I'm going up there later this week and plan on staying an extra day if offered the job. I was in Grayton Beach this weekend and talked to a guy who lived there that said for what I wanted to pay I should look inside I-385.
I figure $800-1000 for a furnished apt including utilities.

I loved my time in the Greenville area. Very nice downtown. Also some of the best lakes in the country in my opinion. Keowee and Jocasse are just beautiful mountain lakes. Hartwell is fun too.
I hated leaving upstate SC. Charlotte sucked compared to the upstate area.

Be absolutely sure to do some hiking further up in the hills (only 30-45 min drive from Greenville) and go visit the Brevard area in NC (maybe an hour and 10 mins). There is some decent fly fishing near there as well. Gorgeous part of the country.

Wtf? Greenville would probably be my no. 1 choice of where to live in SC.
Easy access to the mountain hiking, kayaking, etc., really nice downtown (Falls Park is one of the best city parks you'll find), minor league sports, decent airport (they have Southwest), easy driving access to Atlanta and Charlotte, good schools, in shape economy.
It is also very affordable, which is something you can't say about Charleston.

For years I drove past Greenville (on 85) going to and from Virgina/DC and Atlanta. Never really thought about it.
Several years ago some friends moved there and I stayed w/ them when Auburn played Clemson. I was really surprised at what a nice little town Greenville was. It has a nice downtown with a cool park on the river. We went to several bars and restaurants and had a really good time.
Sure, it isn't a major city, but for its size it offers a good bit, and has a convenient location as well. I can't help OP regarding specific places to stay, but I think he will have a nice time there.
