The boxing forum and the darting forum cited a big drop in active membership as their reason, along with the amount of time the admins have to dedicate to keeping things running smoothly. People get older, other things happen in their lives that make it harder to maintain sites, etc.

One thing to consider is the cost of hosting and legacy servers that have reached the end of life and the cost to transfer the old data and membership data to a new server or hosting service outweigh the advertising revenue coming in.

I could imagine decades of knowledge posted on these boards one day vanishing because Microsoft or Linux won’t support a legacy program that has been running since the 1990’s. At least if the way back machine site still works we may be able to still see some of those old sites.

Another thing that I think that is becoming a regulatory nightmare has been personal information storage and sharing, some companies and sites have been getting hit with lawsuits or cyberattacks for this data. That is probably increasing liability insurance rates higher too as blood sucking attorneys seek new places for a class action lawsuit to cut their teeth into.

Great observation and so true.

TD is the one site I am on daily but over the years I have been part of a couple dozen groups.

I guess like social clubs (Elks, Moose, VFW, AL, etc) people find other stuff to do and the participation drops off.

Most of the forums I used to frequent have also died off but a few are going strong but discord, FB & Reddit have pulled many participants away.

Reddit has lots of discussion groups but i highly moderated and extremely slanted so even a back handed comment could get you banned. FB is awful for discussions.

The liability issue and compliance probably is likely the last shoe to drop causing people to close up.

This has happened with a couple of online spots on my radar. Basically, the webmaster or whoever would explain that they could no longer maintain it for reason X.

This started a while back. There were a couple of boards that I'd go to for cigar related chat and recommendations. They were very busy boards in the early to mid 2010's. Around 2015 pretty suddenly traffic almost stopped. I recall at one point a company buying up a few of them and tried to consolidate them, but ended up shutting it all down.

Every once in a while I'll check in for one reason or another on a few of them and there will be one or two new subjects a week and only one or two comments. The only cigar board left thats active at all is the Friend of Habanos site. All the others are pretty much dead.

Wish you would monitor the poli-tards on the money board. They are making it a waste of time.
